Haruishi Mari

Quirk: Born to Run (Thunder Road)

@Jojo @Zelosse @liferusher @AdmrlStalfos19 @Scribe of Thoth @Etranger

Mari nodded in response to Kenji's greeting, only to see a familiar face sitting on the opposite side of the large boy. "Ah! Kaito-san, I'm glad to see you here as well. After I left the central area with the dummy during the exam, I had intended to return, but...things came up." She remembered how he not only gave her a boost using his quirk, which helped her move a car pinning down a rescue dummy, but he also helped her bandage her foot and gave her his shoe since she tore hers up and injured herself from the poorly placed kick to the car. For these reasons, Mari had told the proctor, Sakkaku-sensei, that the points for the dummy that she was bringing back should go to Haruto. However, having failed to secure any more dummies herself, and having failed to take down Goudo-sensei, who was hijacking the bus of dummies, Mari partially regretted giving away her single point, thinking that she might have failed the exam, though she ultimately decided to hold fast to her decision and to not regret doing what she thought was right. Besides, the whole concept of points ran counter to her view of heroics in the first place. In the end, it seemed, everything worked out. "When things have settled down, I still have to return your shoe. Please remind me if I forget."

A girl with flaming hair approached and struck up a conversation with Kenji. Mari surmised that they must have met at the other exam. When Elina apologized for the warmth she cast, Mari decided to reassure her, "Don't worry about it. If everyone knew how to control their quirks, we wouldn't need hero schools, would we?"

With that, the lights of the room started to dim, so Mari stopped talking, sat up straight, and directed her attention forwards. Mari listened intently, though Fujino-sensei's statement about the damaged bus made Mari blush and turn her face away slightly, glad that the room was dark, save for the stage. Mari was a bit taken aback when Fujino-sensei referred to Tanifuji as '-senpai', knowing from context that this was what the students were supposed to call her. Mari remembered that Umi had also referred to Tanifuji as '-senpai', which Mari thought was disrespectful. Though Umi had been timid, which Mari interpreted as unmotivated, this revelation made her reconsider her initial assessment of Umi, since she had been attentive enough to pick up on this teacher's particular idiosyncrasy before anyone else.

As Itagaki-sensei came on stage, she recognized him as the 'villain' that Azukina and Hiroki managed to take down. When he singled out Hiroki, Mari quietly breathed a sigh of relief. She knew that some teachers, heck, some schools, often let high-performing students get away with pretty much anything, and was glad to see that this wasn't the case here. But his math pun really got a snort out of Mari, which was surprisingly loud, though she looked around, hoping that no one heard her and that she didn't disrespectfully interrupt the assembly. A few other chuckles from among the audience assured her that she wasn't alone in her appreciation of the lowest form of humor.

Sakkaku-sensei's announcement was...underwhelming. Mari felt the small teacher didn't give enough of an explanation of her role. Her short speech, and the behavior she exhibited as proctor during the exam, made Mari feel that Sakkaku-sensei wasn't very enthusiastic or motivated. Mari made a mental note that Sakkaku might be a problematic teacher to deal with.

Mari perked up at Goudo-sensei's announcement that they would decide on a student representative at some point. As a model student and a by-the-books individual, Mari had held the position several times in her previous schools. It was a thankless job, but somebody has to do it, and Mari trusted herself to do it, and do it right. She didn't like the fact that Goudo-sensei was trying to goad the other students to apply. It was a tedious position and there was no glory in it, and they should just let someone (like herself) with experience and meticulous bookkeeping skills handle it, lest the class devolve into chaos.

Tanifuji-senpai's declaration as their combat coach made Mari balk. There's plenty of dangerous situations for heroes to get involved in besides combat, so this focus on combat, while typical, seemed disappointing. Sure, Itagaki-sensei was their quirk development instructor, but it almost seemed that when it came to 'field training', Tanifuji-senpai was their instructor. But they didn't have a 'rescue coach', or anything like that to balance it out.

Maybe Fujino-sensei balanced it out, since she did mention proper 'bedside manners' with respect to rescue operations, though it didn't cover the physical aspect of it. Maybe Itagaki-sensei would fill that role. But the fact that a teacher was dedicated to combat still rubbed Mari the wrong way.

And finally, the unorthodox arrival of the principal, as well as the Four Pillars announcement, left a sour taste in Mari's mouth. She didn't like the fact that heroes and aspiring heroes focused on competition. Public works was a cooperative venture; the glitz and glamour that heroes sought ran counter to the purported goal. Mari felt that the competitive spirit stained the heroing business. But she had no doubt that many of her classmates were thrilled at the announcement.

Mari also considered the principal's claim to fame. Unfortunately, being a hero was not something Mari had aspired to from a young age. She wanted to be a competitive athlete like the person she looked up to the most, so she wasn't the most knowledgeable about famous past heroes. But times change and dreams shatter, and her overwhelming desire to find her place in the world through service to others has led her here.

With the assembly coming to a close, Mari got up, eager to head to the next segment. Though she wasn't so enthused about the Four Pillars thing, the fact that some among them chatted excitedly about it did do a bit to soften her criticism of it. Many of these students were probably snubbed by the more famous schools, so maybe it was vindicating if they felt like they were still worthy of competing against those schools. Following the train of students that inevitably formed behind Goudo-sensei, Mari arrived at the gym and was impressed when she witnessed the transformation that took place with the layout. Watching Kiko's devastating, and rather villainous attack on the dummy, Mari thought about how she would demonstrate her quirk. She'd rather just run around the track to show what her normal top speed was, and her overdrive top speed and lightning that came from it, rather than actually use it for something. She supposed combat might demonstrate the lightning better, but she was adamant about performing a rescue demonstration. As she considered her options, she didn't step up to the plate yet.

@A Lowly Wretch

Oof. Would Gammaton be able to recognize Ahmenophus' pedestal as intended to hold the divine cord of magic?
@pyroman

Another question, can my character be a member of The Bastion, or have ties to them?
@pyroman Any preferences on faceclaim? I tend to use anime faceclaims, which I realize some people are vehemently against.
Is there a pedestal that would look like Dirka's?
Okay, so there are four potential target cities, I have numbered them based on the order they are introduced in the opening post. I am making a roll on a four-sided die to determine the party's destination.

1. Omega
2. Thromburg
3. Lathesa's Roost
4. Sarm's Tears

roleplayerguild.com/campaigns/472

The results are in, on to Omega, Crown Jewel of The Free Guilds. To quote Gudrun Harkenstone, the Dwarf Councillor, "Omega is a hub of knowledge and a good place to obtain whatever the world has to offer, perhaps not the best quality, but decent. The god there, Omega Mammon, will also bless those among your party who are of the metal affinity, and is known to increase their champion's luck."

You'll have to discuss how the party reached the agreement to head to Omega, maybe Lans made a heartful plea to find his adoptive father, maybe Rehsif shared the strategic benefits of gathering information, or maybe they just agreed that starting at the North and working their way Southward seemed like a good idea.

I'll get a post up for the timeskip
@A Lowly Wretch

Is the divine cord of magic missing in the White Hall?
@Lmpkio

Yeah, apothecary mission might be fun

Gammaton awoke in front of the golden gates. Here his form was less disorganized, ivory, sleeker, representative of the infallible law he desired to embody. Yet he knew not why he was here. He had been in the Administrative Hive, pondering the state of the world and writing up the laws that Lord Ferron had requested of him when the horrible ringing occurred. Each ring had sapped his strength, and he surmised that the higher powers had caught on to his schemes against them and had come to punish him for his insolence. Perhaps this was their prison for him, to seal him away for all eternity. He wondered if the others who had agreed to his Assembly were here too or if he was to suffer incarceration alone. Still, he would get no answers just standing here, staring at these gates, so he pushed forward. Hearing voices, Gammaton quickened his steps, at first happy to see Hayim, but then saddened to know that Hayim's association with Gammaton had trapped the innocent god in this realm too. But upon noticing Oao and Ral, Gammaton knew that their being here likely had nothing to do with his own schemes, as he had not yet gotten around to contacting the God of Treasures and the Goddess of Darkness.

"Siblings! Though it is a great pleasure to see you all again, this is, unfortunately, no time to rejoice. I have surmised for a period of time, that greater powers exist that seek to enslave or destroy us, and I fear that this may be their doing. I am at a loss for I did not expect them to act this quickly, and I do not know what we can do to escape, unless one of you can shed light on this matter?" He looked around at the other gods, wondering if they had a solution, but the sight of the clock gate caught his eye. Though he did not understand what a clock is, he found the image, the very concept of it...beautiful.
