Farim

Mentions: Sultan Raif Kadir @Tae, Mayet @13org

Farim for the most part stayed quiet for the initial tongue-lashing of sorts. He was thankful the queen was rather forgiving towards them. Unfortunately this was less so for those under her own wing. He watched as she gave them a stern yet somewhat loving gesture of parental guidance. He shot a glance at his "father", thinking to himself That's how you practice 'tough love' you dolt. His attention snapped back as he heard the sound of someone being dragged, he watched the beaten and bruised servant pulled into the courtroom and he felt a sense of worry building in his chest.

He heard the complaints of his cousin, and the general unrest that came from the others. There was a dark-haired man attempting to take the blame for himself. As Farim preened his mind he simply could not remember who this man was or if there was anything surrounding him. He thought over and over....He arrived at the estate, met Saiya, and took their own private carriage over. Then he went to some warehouse and from then on it was fuzzy. He was hardly sure if a warehouse was even the place he was at. But he felt a tinge of regret forming as he heard another innocent man being put to death over the mishandlings of noble activities. He debated for a short moment on if he even wanted to say anything. If he drew attention, it would draw attention to Saiya as well, and he felt that he couldn't risk it. But this...this isn't what the Sultan's wife would want. Innocent blood spilled for what? An apology? We weren't 'poisoned'. We just got too drunk and likely just had some ill effects... He felt the need to say something, even if it meant throwing himself into the spotlight for a moment.

"Mayet...please. I know you are tempered but this is still the Queen and King we are talking to. We must show some respect even if you feel that respect was not given. And if someone truly wanted to poison us, we would be a pile of corpses. Someone just wanted to have some fun, and it came with some violent after-effects, either intentional or accidental." He had a feeling his cousin would spit venom back at him, and he would normally avoid her ire rather than taunt her into barraging him with her fury, but this situation called for some tact. He paused once more, taking a few steps forward with a courteous bow before the royal family of Caesonia. "Greetings, Your Highness. I do not believe we have met as of yet. I am Farim Ibn Hafiz Kadir. I apologize for the late arrival, as I had gotten hung up with some prior business on the far eastern shores of my homeland. As a member of the Shehzadi, I do appreciate the hospitality, and the offer to better things in both sides eyes, however..." He turns to look towards the Sultan, kneeling down before him in a greater show of etiquette towards his own nations royalty. "Sultan, I apologize for speaking out of turn, but I must ask you one question. Is this what Esrin would've wanted? That stable boy had no part in this social outing, and has likely suffered enough. There is enough death in the world as it is, do we really need to add another name to the pile?" He stood up, addressing the royal families together. "I am but a noble, and you are all the ones with the final say, but I beseech that we find a more peaceful option. Perhaps the stable boy remembers where this party was? From there we can perhaps find eyewitnesses. Surely someone saw somebody enter that place before us?" He takes a few steps back as he finished his piece, hoping that he could smooth things over somewhat.

After reuniting with Buttercup, Persephone had sat against a wall in the barn and sobbed. A good night had turned into a disaster. From stealing the Ball’s food, reuniting with Kaz and dancing with Prince Auguste, her night had been going well. It seemed as if nothing would go wrong. However, it was fate that it would not end well and her luck would run out. After hearing the conversation with Count Asshole and Charlotte Vikena, her night had deteriorated quickly. After discovering Violet’s deceased and gory body, she’d met Charlotte in person now and a ragtag girl named Ruby. As her mind replayed the event’s, Persephone hugged her horse and cried the entire night. Then guilt would wash over her when she realized he’d be interrogated by Count Dipshit the next morning, and it would repeat. Sleep had become thus an option, and only when she’d exhausted herself emotionally, did it finally welcome her.

The following morning delivered more bad news to Persephone. Wanted posters of her face were pinned to every establishment. The reward was handsome. To her surprise, she was wanted alive. How they had managed to draw her so correctly stunned the vigilante. As Persephone laid on the ground and stared at the barn’s ceiling, contemplating how to end herself, it dawned on her again: Kazumin would be interrogated by Count Damien for something he hadn’t ever done. Rage boiled under the surface and she shot up at the cruel injustice. She wiped her eyes and sniffled, then looked at Buttercup who had woken up earlier and was munching on her hay.

Allowing her time to graze, Seph cleaned up in a nearby river and changed into some clothes she had…. acquired a few weeks ago. Whether or not it had been legal was up in the air. She pulled her hair into a low bun tightly and pulled her hood over her face to help conceal her face. Prior to leaving, she fixed herself a delicious breakfast and relished in the delight of it being stolen from the ball. Once full, she discarded the evidence quickly with a fire she also put out. Her gaze would become stony and impassive whenever she looked at fire. It felt as if she were being mauled alive by ants. Nothing else mattered in the moment until the flames were extinguished and the last pillows of smoke had faded. Once out of the trance, Persephone assessed her surroundings. Her horse had moved away from the fire to graze.

”Buttercup, are you up for a ride, girl?” Her horse looked up and knickered. With a soft smile, Persephone went over to her and tacked her up quickly. Once mounted, Persephone picked up the reins and urged her into a quick walk and eventually transitioned into a gallop. With her bow over her shoulder, quiver of arrows around her waist, and miscellaneous weapons, she was ready. As a wanted rebel or not, there was a rescue mission for a cowlicked blonde with an obsession with pudding waiting for her. While the young rebel rode, a plan formulated in her mind.

A noise escaped Zarai's lips, it was faint and low, and only those directly near her heard it. An attempt at a laugh cut short by pain. She didn't expect anything less from the Caesonian Queen seeing the poor sap being dragged into the hall already deemed guilty by the Queen. Despite the pleas from Callum or anyone else, the man had already suffered, and if somehow spared, he would continue to do so.

Zarai began to push herself to her feet when her mother's firm hand held her down by the shoulders. She winced, looking up at her to protest but was cut off short.

"My daughter was beaten, her rib fractured, and her face—" Francesca lifted a hand from her mother's shoulder and covered her mouth as if trying to swallow down a sob. "Her face cut and bruised like some drunkard. I know my Zarai, and she is not one to seek out a fight by herself. We must find those who lured our children into this event and punish them accordingly." Her mother looked down at her briefly, and Zarai stared up at her.

This is ridiculous.

"Your Majesties, my daughter will cooperate with the investigation." Zarai tried to pull away from the hand on her shoulder, but the grip only grew tighter, and she could feel nails digging into her skin. Her mind kept screaming and kicking, compelling her to stand up and speak up against the Queen for punishing an innocent man. "And I will ensure there is no other incident like this regarding my daughter. She will be punished and her behavior corrected."

The hand on Zarai's shoulder pushed her shoulder forward; the girl followed suit and bowed her head, ignoring the pain. "Apologize." The tone in her mother's voice made her wince again. It was low, cold, and void of any emotion. It was amazing how fast and easily the woman could change tones in a matter of seconds. When Zarai stayed quiet, Francesca smiled at the queen and leaned in to Zarai's ear. "Si no te disculpas en los próximos cinco segundos, me aseguraré de que no dejes tu habitación durante el próximo mes, y tus posibilidades de encontrar un marido adecuado disminuirán."

Zarai glared down at the floor, glad that her face was shielded from the eyes of the queen or anyone else looking at her. "I apologize, Your Majesty King Edin and Your Majesty Queen Alibeth." She looked back at the stable boy. "But I cannot stand by and watch a man sentenced to death for a crime he is not guilty of. I will give my statement on the matter and help in any way possible, but please reconsider the sentence for this innocent man." On the corner of her eyes she could see her mother silently fuming.

The Duchess had stood at her son's side, glancing at him whenever the queen was not speaking; however, he would not raise his head, so she could not quite catch his gaze. While Valerie was off trying to locate Thea, she followed Leo to the hall. She had expected Thea to be caught up in a mess like this... But Leo? The son she raised to put their family and reputation before all? She furrowed her brows as the scene played before her. Queen Alibeth was by no means a kill-happy woman. She would kill if it came to it without remorse, but never needlessly. For her to offer up the young stable boy to slaughter, what had occurred last night had to have been far worse than she could ever imagine.

Still, she had her theory here. She had been in the noble circle since birth, and the Caesonia Queen was only this cutthroat when her precious children were involved. Luckily for her, she supposed the Sultan would not be able to catch on to that. This boy was being thrown under the wagon to cover up her children's mistakes. But which one? As if on cue, Prince Callum moved forward and started taking the blame for everything, but the expressions of others, including that of her own son, told her this wasn't the truth. Prince Wulfric certainly would not be the culprit. The polite Prince Auguste was ever absent, which could be suspicious indeed. However, the sight of Princess Anastasia rubbing her arm nervously, her eyes that of a frightened deer, told the whole story. The girl lacked a poker face and would most certainly become the forefront of the conversation soon enough. Meanwhile, the daughter of the Sultan was clearly livid, and the Sultan himself did not look all too happy either. If they weren't careful here, the war would not be out of the question between the Alidasht and Caesonian Kingdoms.

Alice exhaled softly with short-lived sympathy. Her main focus was Leo here, who she had not even been able to speak to yet about this matter. Her breath nearly caught in her breath when he spoke up. Her head snapped in his direction, and she looked at him questioningly, still trying to catch his gaze. "Leo." She leaned in and whispered in his ear, "Stay out of this matter. It's worse than you think."

Another gentleman from the Alidasht spoke up and introduced himself as Farim, then attempted to calm down Shehzadi Mayet and the sultan as well. Alice was also interested in hearing from the stable boy, but she knew he would possibly not speak if it meant implicating the princess or princes. Lady Zarai then moved forward, calling for them to reconsider and spare the stable boy. She shook her head at her as she spoke. She could respect that Zarai had a kind heart as always, but she was not reading this situation well enough. With tensions this high, the Varian Kingdom had no business intervening.

The Sultan was silent as he had listened to the infamous Queen Alibeth at work. She seemed to know all the right words to say, perhaps much better than her husband could. However, he was no fool. No amount of offerings or charismatic words would fill in the missing blanks of the story. Raif was here with the sole purpose of understanding what happened last night; the rest of it was all irrelevant. He folded his arms as if he were being shown the most predictable of plays. That was until a young man in terrible shape was dragged out. He eyed him up and down with disinterest. A scapegoat. But for whom? Alibeth was clearly quick on her feet and sharp... Had she not realized he had seen this tactic many times before? It was probable she could infer he would realize and had not had time to concoct anything else.

How peculiar the Caesonians are. Pretty clothes and pretty words but never an explanation for their actions.

Raif Kadir had been a sultan for many years now, one who had heard excuses and pleas time and time again. The truth was always between the lines and within the body language of the guilty. If they refused to tell the truth, then he'd find it out for himself. That is why he decided not to even bother conversing until necessary as he observed every move and every word.

The eldest son Wulfric had turned on his own siblings for information. His posture changed as he straightened up. This was the one Mayet was fond of after all. It seemed the younger pair of royals were expected to know who was behind the party. From what he gathered from his children, no one had remembered anything from last night. Was it possible these two remembered? Why would they remember and not his own children? His offspring knew better than to get so intoxicated in a place unfamiliar to them. He let his gaze narrow as displeasure crossed his expression.

His vivacious Mayet, unsurprisingly, was also displeased. She spoke up lowly but her tone was that of a viper all the same. He made a gesture towards her to calm down, placing his palms toward the ground and waving them. His gaze was gentle and understanding as he could not chastise her for her anger. She was making quite some fair points that needed addressing.

"You will be allowed to come and go as you please under your father's blessing. We have no wish to imprison you, Mayet. My idea was to monitor and make sure you are leaving with proper protection."

The Sultan had no issue with the queen's initial reply but they needed the story here. She looked as if she was going to say more but then the young Prince with the dark hair spoke up, taking ownership of the ordeal in a story that still did not add up. To a face never seen and an unknown location. "You take invitations...from a stranger and go to the random location and never find out whose event it is...? Then you had your sister..." His gaze moved to the Princess. She seemed... He raised a brow thoughtfully. He looked over to Mayet again, "Is his story true? He led you to this party?"

Farim's voice filled the room, attempting to smooth everything over, which Raif was grateful for. He had no wish to make this dramatic and put anyone's life at stake unnecessarily. It was preposterous that it was such an ordeal to have the truth be told.
However, the possible dangers could not be downplayed just to keep everything smooth sailing. At this point, he was wondering if someone was trying to create discord between their kingdoms by setting up such strange mishaps. Nonetheless, he let the boy say his piece. His words were respectable enough until Farim turned on him and dared to bring up Esrin as a means to pull some sympathy for the stable boy.

The Sultan stepped forward, heat finding his way into his voice as he addressed those words. "There is something very concerning happening and we simply want the truth."He whirled on Farim. "I have not called for anyone's death so there is no need to guilt me with such. Yet it does seem this boy had a part to play in putting royal offspring in danger, and for that, he should face punishment for his crime. I will leave what punishment is seen fit up to Her Highness Queen Alibeth and King Edin. In order for my family to feel comfortable remaining here further, I demand candor."

Anastasia had smiled faintly in greeting when Wulfric spoke to her. However, soon her attention was stolen by the sight of Callum. Relief overcame her. As he moved over to hug her, she met his steps with her own and hugged him tightly, burying her face in his shoulder as he spoke. She felt as if she were reliving the previous moment. Her mind was taken by the sight of her little brother unconscious in the bed at the clinic as her mother's words plagued her with crippling guilt.

I did that to him.

His words ripped her out of the past, and she plucked her head up, whispering back, "No. I did this..."Anastasia ended the hug to meet his eyes. "I'm so sorry..."She was well aware of her actions; how she usually put herself in a stupid situation one way or another. Everyone would chastise her and let her know how foolish she had been. The thing was, she had known it to be foolish before doing so and could not bring herself to care. But this time, she hadn't expected this outcome, and she cared more than she could handle.

Her mother's words melted into a mess as all took their place to hear her lecture. She didn't need to listen to know what she had to say. It was vague damage control, and that's all anyone needed to know. Her gaze had moved about the rest of the room, looking at the faces of her brothers, the Alidasht, Zarai, Roman...

Did they blame her?
Did they hate her?

A guilty conscience did pull her attention back in to listen to how everyone had been put in danger without empathy. It felt like this was all towards her. I just... I go all the time. Marek wouldn't hurt anyone. I don't understand. I wouldn't let anyone get hurt... Especially not Callum...

Then came the moment Darryn Fletcher was dragged in. That was the moment Anastasia knew that this may be the beginning of the end of her life. A scream caught in her throat, and she moved forward on instinct with terror in her eyes. She could tell they had been hurting him... The sweet freckled boy had only been doing what she asked. She needed to stop this. Her lips parted, but it felt as if fear gripped her by the throat, choking her so she could not speak. At first, she was not sure what was stopping her. She had always acted on impulse. But then she realized it was because part of her felt her next move would ensure her own death.

They were going to demand she give them Marek's name, and she knew she could not do it. They'd certainly kill him. When it came down to it, she was the most useless of the siblings. If she pushed her mother into a corner here and forced them all to accept her as the culprit, she was certain her parents would shrug off having her executed to keep the peace. With all the trouble she caused, she could imagine her mother laughing and talking about how much easier life would be without her. Tears brimmed in her eyes at the imagery. She had gone too far this time.

“Dear sister."

Anastasia averted her gaze to the floor at the sound of Wulfric's voice. Her pupils dilated, and she felt herself slightly tremble as he questioned her the deadly question. She could not bring herself to answer in time. Instead, Mayet started talking, and she sounded really angry. It made her even more nervous. That feeling of perceived rejection was one that could feel like a knife stab. Things took an even worse turn when Callum tried to martyr himself before she could.

I have to say something now. I know mother would never let anything happen to Callum, but he will make me sound less believable. What do I say? How can I fix this? The pressure worsened as Leo brought up Kazumin. Her heart sank, and she felt dizzy. I remember he got in the carriage with us. Did he get hurt too? I don't remember what happened to him… She clutched her head briefly. What have I done?

Another was quick to speak. Farim from the Alidasht was thankfully trying to spare Darryn's life. It became soon clear that he and the Sultan wanted him questioned and she now needed to take the heat off Darryn. She knew Darryn would tiptoe around ratting her out, both because he was kind and because blaming a royal was suicide. Lady Zarai stood up for Darryn too, approaching her mother and father without fear. However, this did not surprise Anastasia as Zarai had always been someone who inspired her. After a moment, Anastasia stepped forward and first turned to the Sultan, ignoring her parents as they were addressing Zarai.

"I'm the one who led everyone to the party." The Sultan seemed to have a neutral gaze upon her as she addressed him. "...I know I am probably making the story more confusing since my brother just took the blame, so, um, you may think I'm covering for him... But everyone here can tell you I am the one that came to their rooms and then led them to the party." She looked at Zarai, her voice shaking, "Right Lady Zarai? R-Remember how I took you guys to Callum's room to get him to come too? " Then she finally glanced at the rest of the room, her eyes moving from Mayet, to Nahir, to Leo, to Roman. Her mouth felt dry. "I told them to meet me at the stables where they saw me get Darryn to drive us on a carriage. You may think I'm lying, but they all can tell you this is true. It was me singlehandedly. I took them to a location on an invitation. I receive it every few weeks, and it's usually under a warehouse or somewhere random. I'm good friends with the person who holds the event."

"Anastasia..."

She was surprised it had taken until that point for her mother to interrupt. Anastasia looked over her shoulder to see the heated gaze of her mother and father. She wasn't sure what to expect them to say or think, but she felt cornered by their angered faces. Was this it? Was this the moment she feared? …The very moment she feared from a child up... This was the moment they'd cast her out. A rush of emotion and anxiety made her feel defensive and the stress leaked into her tone as she rambled on without thought, "But in the end, they chose to come. Because it's like you said, we're all adults. So nobody here has a right to cage us. Maybe if your stupid balls weren't so boring, we wouldn't look for somewhere else! A-And we have a right to! You can't tell us what to do anymore; we're grown up, and we can decide for ourselves what's worth the risk..."There was something about an awkward silence when one was spilling out something controversial that was deafening. She nervously looked around, unable to stop speaking.

"I know none of us knew something that bad would happen, and I admit this situation wouldn't have happened if it weren't for me, but-..."If they wanted the truth, she'd give it to them. It's not like it mattered what she did anymore. "But I think it's ridiculous if you expect us to feel bad we didn't ask permission from you to go. They can all do what they want, and it's twisted to throw Darryn under the wagon to cover for me. If you need someone to blame to keep things peaceful or whatever, let's at least be honest like the Sultan said. I did this-"

"Just tell us who threw the party, Anastasia." The queen's voice cut through hers like a knife.

Anastasia's breath caught momentarily as she realized the gravity of her next answer. It felt as if a spotlight was on her. Finally, she firmly replied. Anger she had boiling under the surface for years made its way into her tone as she told her lowly, "I will never tell any of you their name. " After a careful exhale, she pressed on, "I refuse to let you kill innocent people because you don’t care to investigate."

King Edin had been booming with pride for his prized son Wulfric as he took the focus momentarily. He had always pushed Wulfric to take control of situations as he was the future King. He needed the practice and to understand that the pressure would be all on him one day. However, his smile had fallen when he approached Callum and Anastasia. Good God, Wulfric. You know better than to let those idiots speak.

However, he raised interesting questions. The night prior was an embarrassment. It did not reflect well on their kingdom. Not only were his royal offspring expected to be well-behaved and intelligent, but he was certain the Sultan felt the same and would also feel embarrassed by this outcome.

To his surprise, the Sultan's daughter Mayet was the first to voice her displeasure. King Edin found this extremely distasteful that he would let a young woman speak for the family. The girl thought she was very important, and King Edin shot the Sultan a glance. Did he really not keep the women in line in his family? Surely they must know their place was to remain silent while the men speak first. To think this was the girl who danced with Wulfric sent a shudder down his spine. He wondered if Wulfric would feel humiliated to have such an outspoken creature at his side. Edin sure hoped so. In fact, he hadn't even bothered listening to her words, his gaze moving to the tiger as she spoke. If Wulfric continues to choose her, that vile animal will be the first to go.

King Edin whirled immediately at the sudden sound of Callum’s voice. He had been about to shout over him and silence him when he realized the boy was being a decent individual for once, being honest and owning up to his mistake. He glanced his way as he finished talking and addressed the Sultan. “Yes, my son Callum, well, he hit his head hard as a child and is often a little slow with his decision-making. Harmless, but very unintelligent. It can’t be helped. Please let us know how Callum can make things right with, Your Majesty.”
However, the Sultan had said nothing to that and had simply nodded with an unreadable expression. Obviously, no one was going to blame Darryn, especially because Shehzadi Mayet pointed out how nonsensical the idea was. They were going to have to try a new angle.

It was getting difficult to have a smooth back and forth as all had something to add. Lord Leo Smithwood felt the need to bring up a “pertinent” detail and refer to a man with a cowlick. King Edin leaned over in his chair to scrutinize Leo. Who? What cowlick man? Describe him with more detail.” He had read all about the cowlick man in the morning paper and knew whoever he was, he was bad news. Perhaps he had been to blame! Again, before King Edin could have a productive conversation, somebody else started talking. With a incredulous look on his face, he turned his gaze on a young Alidasht man. The first thing he noticed as that Farim had a superior fashion sense, something King Edin could get behind. The next thing he caught on to was that this Farim guy was trying to keep the peace, which was helpful though boring. He wanted to end this situation so if anyone had any means to smooth it over, it was welcomed.

Ugh. Another claims the stable boy’s innocence. Why does anyone care about him?

The Sultan stepped forward, heat finding his way into his voice as he addressed those words. "There is something very concerning happening and we simply want the truth."He whirled on Farim. "I have not called for anyone's death so there is no need to guilt me with such. Yet it does seem this boy had a part to play in putting royal offspring in danger, and for that, he should face punishment for his crime. I will leave what punishment is seen fit up to Her Highness Queen Alibeth and King Edin. In order for my family to feel comfortable remaining here further, I demand candor."

The Sultan suddenly moved forward and spoke, seemingly unhappy with Farim’s many statements so he clapped his hands and moved forward. ”Yes! Eyewitnesses! I believe we need to ask the young here to describe just what happened leading up to this party. Everyone, we need to give the immensely merciful and kind Sultan the honest truth… Would anyone like to volunteer?”

As if on cue, a pretty young girl came forward and asked for the reconsideration of Darryn. King Edin looked down upon her. Though he firmly believed women should hold off on speaking unless asked to, he supposed he had called for it this time. Besides, she was well-spoken and polite. On top of that, she was familiar.Lady Zaroo. Zaraf. Zakai. Eh. Whatever. Noble from the Varian Kingdom. I should be kind to keep relations with them well. They must be tense with us as well after last night. Nonetheless, King Edin gave her a smile, “Hello there. Your kindness is admirable. We’ll see what we can do about Derek over there… But first, please give your full statement of last night’s events… As much as you can remember.“

From there, King Edin thought things might run smoothly. This graceful Lady of the Varian Kingdom surely would be careful with her words. If she managed to impress him enough, he’d ensure she had a chance to convene with his sons later in the day. Perhaps they’d appreciate a woman like her. He certainly did.

That was when his absolute mental case of a daughter started talking. He had never encountered someone who could make a situation go so wrong ever so quickly. She was now taking the blame out of nowhere when no one had called for it. If only she had been so apologetic when she had drained the kingdom of funds and got some of his best knights killed. When she had been born, he thought perhaps they had been blessed to have a beautiful daughter that they could easily one day marry off, but she never could learn her place. When nothing else had worked, he had resigned to ignoring her. It soothed him to do so normally, but she was currently making herself very difficult to ignore. Did she not realize implicating herself could very well make it seem as if the whole family was in on this catastrophe? As if he was!? He feared the Sultan questioned her motive, and she could not be trusted to have an intelligent answer.

Good friends with the man who held the event? Don’t tell me she thinks she’s in love again…

He was at a loss of words, uncertain if it would be worse to silence her. On the other hand, his wife seemed to be attempting to halt the girl. Anastasia only worsened things as she now had made it seem like they killed innocent people regularly without investigation, villainizing them to the Sultan. King Edin thought he might hurl. He thought he had undergone enough humiliation with Lorenzo’s antics, but now his own blood was ruining everything. She had to be removed from the premise.

King Edin laughed nervously and gave the Sultan an apologetic look. “I’m deeply apologetic, Your Majesty. You see, she’s quite young and has a bit of a lying problem. I cannot tell you how embarrassed I am…”He stood without hesitation, calling, “Guards! Escort her to her room!” The guards looked at each other in confusion, then glanced at Queen Alibeth for confirmation. Unfortunately, King Edin caught sight of this event and scowled in reaction. In an attempt to push past what had happened, he returned his gaze to Lady Zarai and gave her that friendly smile again.

Ríoghnach "Riona"

Because the Vikenas took “full responsibility,” the punishment for “overpolishing the floors” was less severe than it would have been otherwise: all servants assigned to the ballroom were forbidden from consuming anything except for water for the next 48 hours. Seeing that many of the servants were no stranger to hunger, a day or two of fasting was something they could endure. The problem was that it meant that they had to watch the others eat the leftovers from the party as their empty stomachs growled with envy.

Unfortunately for Riona, the incident with the noblewoman had not gone unnoticed. She received 20 lashes for embarrassing the woman in front of everyone, 40 lashes for wasting Callum’s precious time, 1 backhand for talking back, and 1 slap across the other cheek to split evenly. The resident torturer disliked odd numbers.

Afterward, she sought refuge in the youngest prince’s bedroom. Rummaging through his secret stash, Riona took out medicinal plants, salves, and potions. She used just enough to stop the bleeding and prevent infection before returning the items back to their original places. In a notebook tucked away in the corner, Riona jotted down what she used, how much she used, and how much remained.

Riona was listing down ingredients that they needed to restock when a bottle covered in dust caught her attention. Curious, she pulled it out and read its label. Slip & Slide. It was one of the many failed potions they concocted a while back. If she remembered correctly, they were trying to make a glow-in-the-dark fluid that only needed sunlight to recharge its properties. Instead, they ended up with a fluid that made any surface more slippery than an eel. Like an overpolished floor.

Riona carefully considered this thought, then grinned impishly.

A trip to the guest house and one break-in later, Riona was in Lord Leo Smithwood’s room, searching for every pair of shoes he owned. Riona felt absolutely giddy as she coated the soles with the Slip & Slide fluid. Imagining the arrogant man walking around like a newborn fawn made her snicker. Oh, she’d probably burst out laughing if she saw him fall over. She wouldn’t hold back either, she’d make sure he saw that a lowly maid witnessed it and openly ridiculed him for it. A fun thought, but Riona knew he’d probably take his shoes off by that point. Forced to walk barefoot until shoes befitting a lord could be procured. Scandalous.

…And then what?

A stray question slunk into her mind, stilling her hand holding the brush.

What happens after?

Her arms slowly fell to her lap.

Nothing.

This was entirely meaningless. As ineffectual as Callum’s pranks and misdemeanors against his family name. Even if it caused people to get embarrassed, sad, or angry, in the long run, it changed nothing.

With every speck of joy sucked out by the depressing thought, Riona covered up any evidence that anyone had entered the room and left.

Not before painting the doorknob inside the room, though.

The full weight of a grown man crushed Ríoghnach, pinning her in place, preventing her from running away from the nightmare. She struggled to breathe. The pain was overwhelming. The menagerie of screams and shouts that were once deafening, became more distant. Red danced against the black, splashed across her face, and pooled beneath her. Ríoghnach looked up into his eyes.

Blue, blue eyes.

Eyes that looked down at her and watched her slowly die.

Riona awoke with a start. She remained unmoving on the damp bed for a long time, just staring at the ceiling of the room she’d been living in for over a decade. A prison cell she willingly placed herself into to serve a self-imposed life sentence.

Another day served. She was still here. They still existed. Everything was the same as before. A new day began.

With one less stable boy to help out with the stables, Riona was called in to help. She was carrying out a bucket filled with horse manure when she saw Mr. Brisby walking towards the stables. After having to pick up some Varian noble all the way from Erwynn, the coachman was supposed to be enjoying a day off. “Mr. Brisby? What are you doing here?”

The coachman lifted his hat to comb his fingers through his hair. “Well, that was the plan until they told me about Darryn and called me back.”

“Huh, obviously whoever told you that also forgot to mention that I’m filling in for the day. You can go back home and enjoy your day off. You know I can handle this.”

“They didn’t call me in about that,” Mr. Brisby said, his eyes cast down.

Riona frowned, “So what did they call you back for?”

“We’re going to have to find a new stable boy.”
“They’re firing Darryn over this mess?”
“They’re executing him over this mess, Riona.”
Riona blinked incredulously, “They’re… executing him?”
“Today,” Mr. Brisby confirmed.
Riona dropped the bucket and ran out of the stables, deaf to Mr. Brisby calling her name.

She couldn’t understand why the castle’s stable boys had a knack for getting themselves killed because a bunch of spoiled noble brats wanted to have some fun. Her fiancé and now Darryn? It made no sense. It wasn’t fair. They were always the ones getting punished for the nobles' mistakes, while the nobles got a slap on the wrist. It was history repeating itself because there was no reason for it not to.

She regretted not burning the castle down during the party as she entered the palace.

Nobody of significance, soon to be forgotten
Time: 09:00
Location: Danrose Entrance Hall

A black beast stood in the shadows watching the proceedings occurring in the entrance hall. The holy presence of His Majesty and his equally deific children warded off the foul creature. Keeping Its wickedness at bay.

Its eyes, as dark and bottomless as the abyss itself and devoid of a soul, silently evaluated the attendees. Weighting the value of their souls on a scale, recording their names in Its head.

The servant, who so brazenly approached It, asked whether It had come to take Darryn Fletcher away.

It answered with a question, why did they ask?

The servant asked because they needed to know the fate of those whom His Majesty and his bloodline deemed unworthy. There would be no place for them in paradise, but did they at least have a place in the Hells? Or were their souls too damned, even for Hells’ tastes? Were nobodies doomed to be forever lost?

It turned Its soulless gaze on the servant. A deceptively soft smile curved Its lips. It finally answered that It could take Darryn wherever he wanted if he so desired.

Only Darryn knew what Darryn’s desires were, but as a nobody themselves, this servant surmised that he wanted to become someone to somebody, even if it was for a short time, the briefest of moments. Would his execution be a blessing in disguise then? Should he die, he’d leave a mark on her, etched deep within the princess. It would stay there, until the next Darryn—and there was always going to be the next “Darryn”—came by to cover it up. Until then, he would be something to her. Was this all worth getting so close to the sun, Darryn?

Did they think it was worth it?

Pretending to have now realized Its mistake, the creature asked for the servant’s name. The servant gave a name, nonetheless. Faintly aware that they left the door wide open for the devil to waltz right in. It was, however, too late by the time they realized this.

The servant saw their soul staring back at them from two black onyxes. Keeping the same smile plastered on Its face, the beast turned to properly face them. It introduced them by Its stage name and bowed deeply, as if the servant was an aristocrat, then clasped the servant's hand with both of Its hands, as if they were friends. The servant braced themselves for the scalding heat of burning brimstone or the chilling cold of a corpse when their hands touched, but it never came. All there was, was the warmth of a mortal man.

It told the servant what a pleasure it was to meet them, and said the words as if It meant it.

Enraptured by the attention given, the servant felt what it was like to be noticed by somebody. They were no longer one of the many nameless, faceless, nobodies. People so insignificant that they could be replaced by another and nothing would change. Lives destined to be forgotten with time, even by their own flesh and blood. One day, not a trace would be left of them, and it would be as if they never existed in the first place.

But here, at this moment in time, they ascended from being an extra in the background to a character. They were being seen and heard. Their existence was acknowledged by It. By you. An intoxicating feeling. No wonder Darryn couldn’t resist the temptation.

The servant reached their free hand to envelop Its hand. “Likewise.”

It doesn’t matter what the servant‘s name was. Nor does it matter whether they were a he, a she, something in between or beyond. Old or young. Any shade of color. It matters not to anyone, not even you. You’ll soon forget this insignificant nobody. Such is the way of the world. If there is anything worth remembering, however, remember this: this was when the wretched thing was invited inside and not when It received the party invitation. It was only a matter of time for the poison to circulate through the staff. It corrupted their hearts and their minds, and it spread like the plague.

This servant was the first of Its victims.
They were just one of many.

Captain Stratya had melded in with the common folk. She worked odd jobs for spending money, and stayed in a room at the tavern. She'd worked with a local bank to hold her more precious belongings, like her armor. With a bit of exchanged currency, the bank was the only one that knew she was a foreigner, though she didn't try particularly hard to hide it. She only really wanted to conceal her status, at least for a little bit.

While it was fun to be a commoner again for a while, she did have work to do. Between hearing of the appearance of a high-ranking military officer and a rumor about nobles having some kind of warehouse party (oh dear), Stratya knew it was time to go back to work. She retrieved her armor, heralding, and other sensitive belongings from the bank.

Now dressed recognizably, Stratya had a choice. For once, she didn't have to make the choice, however. She was making her way toward the castle when she saw that high-ranking officer she heard about leaving an eatery with a woman. Including her own, that made for an awful lot of foreign swords in one place. It was the kind of thing that might make a new guard nervous, but more veteran guards should be used to it.

The officer bore colors she didn't recognize, and the other woman had a strange sword, long and curved back and narrow. "Here I thought all foreign dignitaries would be in the castle. Well, I guess that makes three of us," as though she wasn't already aware that she would find this particular officer in the town. "Captain Durmand, of Caesonia."

A sliver of light kept prodding the prince over his eyes, and finally, he relented and made a small motion with his body as he allowed himself to wake up. He was on the floor, hand still holding tightly to his sword. It took him little time to remember why he was not in his bed, and he quickly sat up, moving his attention to where he presumed Lady Smithwood would be. However, her presence was absent.

Of course. He studied the sheets and comforter and how they had been moved. His shoulders relaxed. She could be quiet when she wanted to be. That was some sort of relief. His leg flexed along with his arm, and he stood up. He felt stiff some sleeping on the floor, but it came with a conscious of comfort. His hand untucked his pocket watch to view the time. It was later than he had thought. It was a quiet discomfort that he had slept so long and sound. The pocket watch was tucked into his pocket, and next, the rapier was placed along the wall, where a sword carrier was hung. He removed his jacket and draped it onto the hook on the coat rack.

The first thing he would do was shower. He could still smell the aftermath of the ball on him. There was also a floral scent from Lady Smithwood. While he did not dislike the smell, he found it would be somewhat embarrassing to flounce her in such a matter. He drew in a sigh and looked towards the unkept bed. He had a lot of sorting to do.

After his shower, still many things were on his mind, and Lady Smithwood was amongst all of them. Her appearance had caused much turn amongst gossip, which was, again, not surprising. There was a lack of proper surprise in her element that he found unnerving, and for this reason, he decided it was only orthodox to guide her such a decent direction -- by surprising her with a gift. After Prince Felix showered and made himself ready for the day, he discarded the tabloids, sent a message (through a maid named Mathilda) to the Lady, relating her prescence is requested at The Gossamer, forewent having any sort of breakfast, and made his way towards the markets.

He had some time before the horse races would begin. In the meantime, he had an entire conversation to hypothesize. Rarely did his meetings with Lady Smithwood go as planned. Occasionally, he felt a warmth towards her, and it was these times he began pondering what could have made such a tendency. Although, he felt some fear in this happening. There were too many unpredictable variables. Last night only proved his point. Of course, last night was the only reason he felt it so necessary to invite her out for an evening. He would rather have them enjoy the festivities without minding each other. However, the current circumstances seemed a little too obvious to ignore.

As he had already elaborated in his own mind that scandal was all part of a historical legacy in the royal courts. There were many reasons for scandal, and sometimes the reasons for them were not so obvious. Of course, for power, but beyond such the snake was cunning. And Lady Smithwood was fragile. The seams of her likeness were undone, and he felt it was necessary that he at least make something of the loose threads, if not for the sake of his betrothed, then for his own curiosity. Any scandal hurting the court of the Varian Kingdom was worth his time.

With his rapier at his side once again dressed for the athletics of the day -- he would change for the date later tonight contigent upon Lady Smithwood's approval of the request, Prince Felix made his way towards the jewelers. He briefly thought of something easily customizable as so no one else would have it the same. Next, he discarded the idea of a ring. There was something too romantic about it that frightened him, as he had yet to begin dreaming of the perfect wedding ring for her. He did not choose a necklace -- something wrapped around her neck, like a collar. A bracelet seemed far too simple, and if he were to gift her earrings, they would never be seen unless she did something special with her hair, which he would not find attractive. He preferred her hair free flowing, which was some sort of mystery to him, as it matched her personality. While he felt hostile towards her overly whimsical nature, he also found it secretly endearing, which is why he chose a hair piece. It was beautiful and would not attract unwanted attention to any part of her. It would do the opposite. It would exemplify her nobility.

"You will be allowed to come and go as you please under your father's blessing. We have no wish to imprison you, Mayet. My idea was to monitor and make sure you are leaving with proper protection."

Alibeth knew this morning would be difficult. There was not much they could have done to prepare in such a short time frame. No matter how she could twist it, the monstrosity that had been the prior night and morning was not acceptable. She folded her arms behind her back and balled her fists. If only… Alas, she knew her place was to hold her tongue now that her husband was here. She needed a moment to think anyhow.

However, holding her tongue after her son spoke, taking the blame unnecessarily out of nowhere, was almost impossible. Her gaze snapped on Callum with anger. She expected more intelligence from him. There had been no need for him to martyr. If there had only been more time, she could have gotten him on board with the plan. She was not throwing Darryn under the bus for just his and Anastasia’s sake. This was also about the kingdom. If the blame were put on him instead of the stable boy, the Alidasht could have reason to suspect their family’s involvement. Combined with last night’s antics, it may seem as if they were being made out as fools, which they clearly would not stand for.

To say something now would only worsen things, especially with her husband supporting the notion. Though the queen was a woman normally quick on her feet, this situation was becoming exceedingly difficult to talk her way out of. As the Grand Vizier’s son spoke up, she noticed his father practically seething with anger nearby. Despite that, it became clear that Farim was trying to smooth things over. The Sultan was surprisingly remaining calm as well and rather reasonable with his request, though one she could not quite fully grant.

Lady Zarai of the Varian Kingdom subsequently stepped up in defense of Darryn, and she almost rolled her eyes. This isn’t the time to play hero. Her pig of a husband was, of course, eager to speak with her. The girl would not get her chance to speak regardless, as somehow things would take another twist.

Anastasia apparently was feeling very honest.

And the more she spoke, the sicker Alibeth felt.

There is no point in this rambling. Incriminating herself as much as possible, and for what purpose? Good friends? God. I should stop her.

"Anastasia..."

That, of course, did no good. Even her father, who normally did his best to avoid her, was mortified with her. There was no tact nor class in her speech. Additionally, all of it was useless information. Alibeth felt it did not matter at this point who brought them to the party or even that they went. She was certain the Sultan wanted to know as much as her why they came back in such a state. From the front-loaded focus in the stories Callum and Anastasia had told, none of that information had been provided. Perhaps they could end this all if they could simply find out who threw the party and subsequently throw them into the arena. There, they could all watch the evildoer hang and feel at peace. "Just tell us who threw the party, Anastasia." The queen was met with a rebellious retort in reply.

Of course. Why would anything simply be easy?

King Edin’s gut instinct was to get Anastasia out of the room. Their daughter was quick to protest quite passionately, so despite her initial judgment, she nodded curtly to the guards who moved to the princess’s side. While it was not one of his worst ideas, Alibeth felt simply ending this before it got worse was the best choice. Though she knew normally he’d be angry with her for speaking and not letting him take the glory, she figured in this instance, he’d appreciate ending the chaos. “I propose we dismiss this event here and move on to some breakfast. It seems more investigation is required in order to find the perpetrator… Your Majesty.” She angled her body to face the Sultan. “If this is alright with you, My husband and I would like some time to gather intel from my children and whoever else we can. As soon as possible, I will then meet with you again with all the answers you desire. Whatever steps are necessary to make you and your family comfortable and happy here, we are willing to take.“ She glanced toward Wulfric, wondering if she was on the same page as her.

Wulfric wasn't surprised Mayet was the first to speak up, nor was her fierce anger unexpected. Her approach to the Lorenzo issue had been similar, though she was now even more incensed.

“…an attempt to poison or intoxicate us…” Wulfric tilted his head in interest at that. Mayet was not told the doctors’ supposition that Anastasia might have been poisoned, so she must have drawn the conclusion herself. Callum assumed he might have given everyone opium. Mayet assumes they were slipped something…But no one knows anything.

He agreed with the shehzadi’s statement that these incidents were unlikely to be a coincidence. “It does seem like someone might be trying to subvert the relations between our kingdoms,” the prince commented.

Mayet was clearly displeased to be questioned, glaring at him, but Wulfric met her gaze calmly, slowly raising an eyebrow up at her. You may not like it, but this is all in aid of finding the quarry we both seek. Then she stated her desire to personally interrogate the criminal, saying that “their blood would already be on my blade” if she had it her way. He nodded once in acknowledgement and appreciation. You and me both.

The next one to speak was Callum. Wulfric caught his gaze, and knew exactly what his brother was about to do. He sighed near silently, resigned to it. He listened as Callum built off of Mayet’s comment to protect Darryn, and how he tailored his story in such a way that only he was implicated. Oh, but you can lie. Though largely unhappy with him, there was also the smallest measure of pride for his youngest brother, because Callum wasn’t half-bad at this when he put his mind to it. However… Wulfric glanced at the Sultan, who was unconvinced with the presented story, and extremely unimpressed with the proceedings in general. Quite discerning.

Father didn’t notice, of course, and happily denigrated Callum, pushing the blame onto him. Which you anticipated and made use of, little brother. Edin had no idea, but contrary to his opinion, Callum was intelligent.

One by one, the other noble children spoke up. Leo implicated Kazumin Nagasa, and though Wulfric doubted that man would have any further relevant information, he made a mental note to pursue the matter at a later point. Much more interesting was the Smithwood heir’s last statement. “And everything after entering the warehouse remains a blur.” That all their memories were so thoroughly affected…It was disconcerting, to say the least.

The Vizier’s son, Farim, introduced himself, attempting to placate both sides. However, the blunt attempt of manipulating the sultan via his deceased wife was in poor taste. About as subtle as a sledgehammer.

Zarai and her mother spoke, and it was apparent to Wulfric that his…friend…resented every second of the situation. It came as no surprise that she also tried to spare Darryn. But, really, ‘help in any way possible’? He didn’t know what she thought she had to offer. Yet his father was pleased. Now that, that was just too good, and Wulfric decided then and there that he would absolutely tease Zarai about it (if when things weren’t so tense).

Unfortunately, things went from bad to worse when Anastasia spoke up. Not only did she take her share of the blame needlessly, she rebelliously dismissed the severity of the situation. “they chose to come…no right to cage us…we have a right to…can’t tell us what to do…” Wulfric felt his expression harden as he looked at his sister stonily. Despite his anger, there was also genuine sorrow underneath it all when Anastasia called for an investigation. Because she did still mistakenly believe the host to be innocent. Because a ‘friend’ had deceived her. And because…You do not know what you are asking for, Anastasia.

Edin had her swiftly escorted out after making apologies for her, while Alibeth took it upon herself to try and conclude the meeting. Wulfric caught her glance, and subtly inclined his head in agreement. There was little point in prolonging this. “It has become clear that no one here remembers what happened at the party,” he said as he turned to their guests.

“Rather than question those who do not know, I suggest we conclude this meeting so we may launch an investigation after a short break.” He briefly looked at his father to assess his reaction. “Thankfully, we have a few leads to begin with, including Fletcher and my siblings.” Farim’s words had prompted Wulfric to think that the stableboy might have seen something of significance from outside the warehouse. While Darryn having something of note to relate was a distant possibility, he did prefer to cover all his bases.

Finally, he turned to regard the sultan seriously. “Please rest assured that we will obtain the information, Your Majesty.”

Crystal & Count Calbert

Crystal woke up with a groan when suddenly her curtains were whipped open by one of her maids “Time to wake up Lady Crystal. You have a busy day today !”

Crystal answered with a whine as she sat up in her bed, her hair a rat's nest as she rubbed the crusts out of her eyes. She was excited to go out, but she never really was good in the mornings…mostly due to her bad habits of reading or writing far too long into the morning.

“You really need to stop reading into the wee hours of the morning my lady.” The maid said as she gathered up the few books that had spent the night on the bed with Crystal. Placing them on the nightstand on the left side of her bed.

“I can’t help it. I was excited for today, so I was wide awake, and then I was bored because I was just laying there…. So I read.” Crystal replied as she flopped her hands from her eyes into her lap, her eyes closed still as she swayed back and forth in an attempt to stay upright. Before schoching a few times to the edge of her bed, looking like a child trying to get out of their parents bed.

As the maid went to her closet, Crystal reached the edge of her bed and let out a yawn while stretching her legs and arms at the same time before flopping back into the bed, her toes barely touching the ground. Her thoughts turned to the experiences last night, some great, some horrible… She felt her heart beat hard as she grew even more nervous about today. She pulled a pillow over and stuffed it over her face and wrapped her arms around it tightly.

The maid came back out with a cream colored dress. With a matching large hat. Crystal peaked from under her pillow. “Your mother the countess had requested you wear this.” The maid walked over and hung the dress behind a panel screen for her.

Crystal pulled herself up slowly and sat for a moment. Her thoughts drifted to her mother and sister… The latter gave her a sour look on her face. She didn’t even come over to say sorry for brushing her off yesterday after she totally helped her set up a dance with that ogre. She blinked, she didn’t even see her lights on last night as she went to her room. She looked to the maid to ask her if she saw Violet, but the words caught in her throat. Second guessing herself and deciding she didn’t want to talk to her anyway this morning.

She got up and dropped her pillow back onto the bed as she shuffled to the water closet to freshen up before changing into her outfit.

Her hair a mess still, after slipping her dress on, she came out and moved to her vanity. Noticing her stocking and boots were laid out for her. “Thank you Sarah….Could you please get the paper? I believe the schedule is inside.”

“Of course m’lady.” Sarah bowed and headed to the door as Crystal started to brush her own hair, humming a song her mother always hummed while brushing crystals hair when she was growing up.

As Sarah was heading to the door, there was a knock. Her father, Count Calbert, was just outside it with a couple new friends. Though, they were off to the side as he did not want to overwhelm her with them. He planned to gently ease her into it with hope she’d understand. “Good morning, Crystal my dear! Might I have a word with you?”

Crystal stopped mid brush as she looked at the door. Sarah looked back at her waiting for her cue to open the door. At which she nodded, going back to brushing her hair and looking at the mirror which was facing the door. “Yes Father.” She said softly. She watched as Sarah opened the door and curtsied to the Count. Her keen eyes noticed the few men off to the side as she softly said respectively to the master. “M’lady is decent…” Her eyes pointedly towards the men behind him. “But not prepared…” she added with emphasis while stepping out of the way of the Count, leaving the door open enough for him to sneak through while hiding Crystal from the others.

Calbert entered and gave Sarah a gentle smile, nodding to her in greeting. He noted her words and shut the door behind for the time being. He came to greet his daughter with a sincere hug. “You look lovely as always. How are you feeling this morning, darling?” He greeted. Whatever emotions were swarming his head, he was careful to keep them away from his expression other than the warm love for his daughter.

She stood up as her father walked over, seeing Sarah open the door again and slip out. She gave her father a tight hug back, as well a kiss on his cheek, groaning with an eye roll as he said she looked lovely as always to her. “Unlikely…” as half her hair was still a mess and her eyes were dark.

“I’m tired…. Couldn’t sleep. So I read…and didn’t sleep more.” she said a bit sheepishly. As she pulled back and sat back down on her vanity stool.

“But I’m excited and nervous for today.” She continued as she brushed her hair a few more times, turning back to the mirror. “So what did you want to talk about?”

Calbert frowned, “Well if you need to sleep in today a little bit, I understand, but do be advised that the Princes are meeting with noble women later today if you’d still like to go.” He began to gently comb his fingers through her hair to fix it up a little. “And this is where what I’d like to talk about comes in.”He sighed and took a moment before continuing, “So there are few subjects to speak about, actually, dear. Let us sit… Sarah won’t you be a dear and fetch some tea?”

He took a seat upon one of her chairs and awaited her to join. Once she had joined, he spoke once more, “Your mother and Violet are on their way to Montauppe currently…She left you a letter as she did not want to wake you, but she will return to you once more very soon. “ He handed Crystal an envelope. “Violet’s gotten on to some mischievous behavior and we are sending her away to spend some time with your mother away from the gossip and trouble until she is in better sorts.”

Crystal nodded as he ran his fingers through his hair to help fix it…only to catch a knot to cause her to wince but she didn’t show it. “Of course…I’m tired but I can push through the day.” She said softly. As she continued to brush her own hair quickly when he continued on. Asking Sarah for some tea. Who in turned curtsied and silently moved out of the room, slipping through the tiny gap in the door she opened, and closed it again

She sighed slightly as she placed her brush down and got up moving over to him and sat down, giving him her full attention. She was shocked when he mentioned that they were on their way home. She took the letter and glanced at the front and back, but did not open it. Only placing it upon her lap gently when her father mentioned Violet’s behavior. Crystal knew right away it had to do with Roman… probably because she showed him her scar. Someone had to have seen it apparently. On a normal day she would have been annoyed… but with how they treated her after pushing them together last night she couldn’t help but feel guilty that she felt glad at the karma. But despite what she felt she did say quickly, “I doubt she was being that mischievous father… probably drank too much…but she actually met someone she actually was interested in... ” saying it softly and respectfully… leaving it at a tone that she wasn't going to fight him on the matter.

It was weird that mother went with her though. Certainly he could have just sent her home with some guards. But she assumed her mother would have written about it in the letter so she didn’t push it. She did look sad though… She did want to talk to her mother about her experiences last night.

“I wish she would have woken me up… Now I have to wait months to talk to her about my experiences here” She said softly with a clear pout. Her hands falling to her lap. She felt a bit like more of her safety blanket was torn from her. She didn’t want to bother Charlotte by clinging onto her this entire time… but she was now the only woman she knew here.

“She wanted to let you sleep.. Your mother will come back to visit soon I’m sure, darling.” Calbert told her.

She had a sudden thought, realizing he said there were multiple things…“Don't tell me you’re not going to let me walk around the town now because of Violet's behavior…” She asked worriedly, sitting up as she did. He did tend to go a bit overboard when it was ‘damage control time.’

Calbert did not enjoy lying to his daughter. However, this was all for her own good. It would be easier to digest once she had time to adjust to the lack of Violet’s presence and she had a husband to comfort her. He missed Violet dearly and wanted to mourn her as a family, but he also did not want to jeopardize the start of Crystal’s life. She had a chance to marry a prince here and that was what could keep their family safe from now on. With the security of the royal guard, there would be nothing Crystal would ever have to worry about. The power they’d have access to eventually would be incomparable to that of what they had now.

“Well. That’s the other matter I wanted discuss with you… There’s been a rise of criminal behavior here. Your mother and I spoke about this and decided you’ve been cooped up enough. However, we do not want to worry about you out alone and I am sure you would like to feel safe as well. You are a woman of high status and unfortunately a target. Thus, my dear, I came up with an idea to hire some bodyguards.. “ He paused to let her digest the information, “I’ve only selected those in my circle that you may recognize. When you are ready, I’d like you to meet them and let me know if you are pleased with them. “

Crystal’s heart leapt into her throat as he started. It easily could have gone exactly as she thought, but she sighed with a bit of relief as he said they didn't want to coop her up anymore. There was a catch though… she was to be surrounded by bodyguards. She hated the idea, though she could understand his explanation why. She wasn’t a fool… But she still wasn’t happy about it..

Calbert knew that the last thing a young woman like Crystal wanted was to be babysat all day, so he did decide on exceptions to the rule, “If you are going to be at a public event in the day time, they will simply escort you and wait on the sideline. If you are going to be with a group of trusted friends I will allow that as well. I wish for them to accompany you while you are moving from point A to point B. If you would like to discuss other compromises, I am happy to. ”

She perked up at the compromises. She was confused at first, as she would normally have to fight for as much space as she could… but he offered it outright. She sat there confused and surprised for a moment. Blinking as she tried to think of some more compromises… but what he offered was already very reasonable.

“I-I um…” She stuttered, still trying to think of some way to get more freedom. “I guess… that will.. Be..acceptable.” She said slowly, trying to sound like she was in control. But clearly and adorably not.

Calbert beamed at her cooperative response, ” Excellent. Would you like to meet them now?”

“Yes daddy… I would like to meet them with half my hair a mess and no make up.” She said with a small sarcastic tone. “I..um… need about fifteen minutes…”

”Okay darling. I will have them seated in the dining room waiting to meet you. …Take your time.” Calbert told her then turned on his heels to depart.

Mayet watched with sharp eyes as the situation unfolded. One of the princes, Callum, quickly agreed with Mayet's words, only to use them to take all the blame upon himself, supported by King Edin, whom showed himself more and more to be as much of an incompetent idiot and a bumbling fool as Mayet initially thought. Eager to throw his own child to the lions in order to save face, he immediately agreed with Callum, spouting pathetic excuses of how Callum was slow-witted and hit his head as a child.

Leo Smithwood also had an interesting point to add, talking about the 'odd man with a cowlick' who was also present. The description immediately reminded her of Kazu, the same man whom she briefly met in the ball and seemed to be very interested on Nala. Despite the apparent suspicion Leo held towards Kazu, Mayet wasn't really sure that he was capable of something like that...

"Kazu, if my memory serves me right. That man is a simpleton. An amusing one, but far too much of an airhead to be able to scheme something like this." Mayet replied, quickly dismissing Leo's suspicion about Kazu as unfounded.

It was exactly after Mayet said those words that Farim turned towards her, saying she should still respect the King and the Queen, Mayet's stare towards him was truly terrifying. Did he really have the audacity to think that the queen and the king were more important than her? That she, Shehzadi Mayet, owed them respect and courtesy despite how she has been treated? How could someone who was a member of the Alidasht Royal Family act like that, to grovel at their feet as if they were their servants or vassals?! Despite the anger she was feeling, she did make an effort not to raise her voice... At least not too much, especially since the Sultan, despite silently asking for her to calm down with a discreet wave of his hand, did not reprimand her.

"Don't you dare saying that I owe them unconditional respect, despite how they treat me! I am not their vassal or their servant! I am Shehzadi Mayet Kadir and I demand to be treated with the respect I deserve as a member of the Alidasht Royalty!" Mayet said as she turned towards Farim. Her voice bursting with anger.

"Besides... There were already countless attempts to poison members of the Alidasht Royal Family and all of them were dealt with swiftly. The fact that we do not remember anything that happened last night would be enough to warrant the execution of every single person who was directly responsible for the party and the drinks if we were in Alidasht." She finished, almost hissing at Farim.

Unfortunately for Farim, not only he did incur Mayet's wrath, but by trying to use Esrin, the Sultan's late wife and her mother, to manipulate the Sultan, would quickly show Farim that her father's patience wasn't infinite.

Mayet simply looked to Farim once she heard him saying that. Despite not saying anything, the icy glare she sent Farim when he tried to use her mother's name to manipulate the Sultan was truly frightening, enough to send a shiver down one's spine and definitely way worse than anything she could have said. Especially if one knew Mayet and knew very well she did not bluff or make empty threats.

Fortunately, despite Farim's words and the game the Queen was trying to play with them, the Sultan wasn't a fool and seemed to be as aware of what was going on as Mayet was. As soon as the Sultan began speaking, Mayet knew that even his almost infinite patience was starting to run out and he wouldn't tolerate being made a fool of.

"No, father. He wasn't the one who-" Mayet began saying, only to be interrupted by no one other than Anastasia, the one who probably had the worse alibi between all caesonian nobles.

In a flurry of words, Anastasia quickly shattered any plan the queen might have of pushing all that situation under the rug or blaming someone else. While it was somewhat amusing to see Queen Alibeth's expression changing as her plans and schemes were shattered by her own daughter and King Edin's desperation, Mayet was more focused on Anastasia...

She knew exactly who was the one who organized the party and yet, she refused to say. Foolish as she was, it was incredibly likely that she was simply used by this person. And despite everything, she still somehow thought he was innocent. Regardless, Anastasia's words made it impossible for the Queen to try and avoid taking responsibility for what was going on in her kingdom.

Mayet's stare towards Anastasia was piercing. Even though Mayet knew Anastasia was incredibly unlikely to be directly responsible for the party, she knew she was trying to protect someone who was, unaware that she was being used by them.

Before any other questions could be made though, King Edin, by the first time since the meeting had started, did something by himself and immediately ordered the guards to escort Anastasia to her room before Queen Alibeth made a rather daring move, asking for some time to order her thoughts.

Despite her almost murderous aura, which she made no effort to hide, Mayet simply stood quiet as Queen Alibeth proposed for the meeting to be adjourned and Wulfric assured them that they would investigate the issue.

"That girl is being used. She doesn't even have the capacity to lie. Let alone to scheme something." Mayet said in a low tone, both to the Sultan, her siblings and her cousins.

If the scenery before him couldn’t have become more idiotic, it had. He watched, one by one, the partygoers either began covering their tracks or flat out throwing one another under the bus. However, one person impressed him the most: his youngest and formidable niece. Mayet’s outburst delighted him. What a smart and ferocious young woman she had become. It was a shame she didn’t want the throne; she had the ferocity and her priorities straight regarding their kingdom. Still, he’d keep her in mind. He rolled his eyes when his brother motioned for her to calm down. With a quiet sigh, he gave her an approving nod with a grin in his eyes.

Then, unfortunately, the youngest prince, Callum, spoke up, and his gaze flicked to him. The disappointment of the family was taking the blame. Fitting. Hafiz sighed internally as he waited for the pitiful scene to dissolve. Fortunately, Duke Leo of the Varian kingdom spoke up next and was equally displeased by the result. Whether or not they were on good terms or not, he couldn’t decipher. His words were helpful, though; due to the discovery of some bumbling fool with a blonde cowlick had been named. The description did ring a bell, although. Despite his lack of attendance, he knew who it had been. He’d seen the good-for-nothing peasant dancing with Princess Anastasia yesterday. Hafiz’s cold gaze had rested upon each of them as they spoke while analyzing them. It was as if he could see through them to their core.

Hafiz was ready to interject when his son - he shuddered at the thought - spoke up. He then inclined his head toward him to listen. As he rambled on, Hafiz felt his anger rising. Clenching his fists, he imagined pounding him to a pulp. How had he created such a foolish son? The man was hopeless. Was he not furious with the treatment of their kingdom? He was as soft as his brother. It was an embarrassment to the old regime that, as royal guests, they would endure treatment like this. They had been humiliated as soon as they had walked into the door and now practically poisoned at a so-called party, and all Farim could think to do was smooth things over. As if that wasn’t bad enough, he brought up Esrin.

He shifted his weight from foot to foot to try to contain it. How could that boy have my blood? I could rip him limb from limb! Does he not feel any shame? … The only beneficial thing that comes from you being my son is that you’re not Raif’s son… There will be punishment. For Farim and for these Caesonian bastards. His head whipped to glare at his brother, disgusted with his calm countenance.

As he readjusted his gaze away, Saiya crossed his mind. It was clear that Farim had been smoothing things over for her sake. She hadn’t remembered anything either, so what good was she? He knew she had been the one to escort him there and involve him in this mess. He wanted to punish her, but it would invoke the wrath of the others. He hoped, despite his son’s wishes, that the Sultan would remove her head for her deed. She was as guilty as the servant boy Alibeth had presented after all. He would be out a spy, however, and quite the spy she was.

Suddenly, all hell broke loose when the Danrose daughter began her confession. Hafiz watched her break down and recognized the damage the girl had. It reminded him of…. His thoughts trailed away before he could finish that sentence. Her tears, panic, and then her rebelliousness made Hafiz want to choke her until she begged for mercy. He couldn’t stand when people let themselves become an emotional mess. If it weren’t for the audience, he would have spoken to her and let her know what he thought.

Unfortunately, the King of Caesonia spoke up and ushered her out. He blamed his youngest children and found it amusing how broken of a family they were. He noted it in the back of his mind while analyzing the situation. The eldest prince spoke again, and Hafiz felt his ears ringing with rage. Of course, nobody could remember! They had been practically POISONED! Hafiz let out a low growl, unable to fully contain it anymore. They wanted to investigate it? Was he SERIOUS? Did he truly think their family would feel reassured? They were incompetent! There had not been one hour while in Caesonia that something foul had not occurred! Hafiz stared icily back at Wulfric and gave no response or acceptance of his words.

Before he could begin, Mayet spoke up and gave his son a piece of her mind and he felt more pride swell inside of her. She was right on target and spoke the most sense. How was it nobody else was noticing that the Caesonia Kingdom was trying to make a mockery of them? He barely heard her sympathy for the princess.

Hafiz, however could no longer remain silent and, as such, finally began his tirade. "NO.” His voice came out low and cold as he marched forward. ” We have been humiliated, our children poisoned, memories taken, and now we’re supposed to trust you? Do you realize how absurd that is? It was obvious that you were covering for your daughter and will continue to do so! Do you think your pretty words will reassure us that you are not trying to ruin our diplomacy? You have a lot of nerve asking for us just to wait and let you investigate. You were ready to throw the stable boy to his death to save your own skin! Unless…” He paused, and a calculated smile crossed his features.

“We will take the lead on the investigation and work with your people. Perhaps then we can start forgiving you for your insolence. I also demand that we be treated with more respect and hospitality during our stay. If one more thing happens to my family during our stay, we will not hesitate to take action.” He glared at them, his eyes moving across the crowd like a wild animal ready to pounce and tear them apart. He huffed as his breathing increased, and he scowled at them. ” Your duke still needs to be punished for humiliating and injuring my family last night. My brother may be merciful… but I do not forget nor easily forgive my enemies.”

Time: Morning
Location: Sorian Vikena Estate

“The tavern? The library?” Lorenzo questioned Charlotte’s places of interest in finding him… wherever he had been. And like clockwork, the fancy mustache-wearing count pointed to the flower petal with a displaced pride. Why was he proud of this? “Clearly, you didn’t look in my favorite hiding place. Hmph. But I won’t hold that to you, Lottie. The garden we have here is vast and full of thick, healthy flowers… that I ruined but… you know… Just. Just thank heavens we’re both safe!” He pulled her back into a hug. “Never again,” but what did he mean?

Charlotte’s eyes dilated as memories of the garden doused in the night’s darkness painted themselves before her. Nothing had been there. She had checked everywhere. She hadn’t even noticed she was being hugged as she ran through the images over and over, wanting to clarify her own sanity. “I did!” Charlotte cried out defensively suddenly. She gave him a quick hug and then let go to readjust her head so she can look him in the eyes. “Lorenzo, I searched the garden. You… You weren’t there.”

Her certainty challenged what Lorenzo thought to be true, so much so that gently scratched the back of his neck nervously as he attempted to jog his memory. Still nothing. I don’t remember anything! Blast this cursed affliction! He cleared his throat before offering up an explanation.

“Well, that is rather peculiar… are you certain? I- You started your search in the night, so you likely just missed me. Yes! And I was under the oak tree shading from the moonlight. A shadow in the dark.” He bobbed a pointed index finger with the last five words as he felt he had come up with a new idea for a poem.

Perplexed, Charlotte was deep in thought for a moment before she sighed. She could look more into this later. Frankly, she was exhausted, and apparently, her stepfather had been sleeping in the dirt all night, so it would do either of them no good to go back and forth. “I suppose I did....” She relented.

“Just what on earth did you two get up to last night!”

Delilah entered the room with the daily news stretched out between her hands before her. Her eyes were wide with surprise as she pointed at it. “The rumors are insidious! And Duke Lorenzo, sir, you’re headlining! Delilah’s words caused Lorenzo to spring up, jolted with… excitement.

“Am I?!” Turning from Charlotte, he moved to Delilah’s side to peer at the newspaper. It was easy to discern the death of his optimism as he spotted the headline. “Warmongers? It- It was simply a mistake. I mean, Charlotte you were right there. I… I didn’t touch anyone! It was the over-polished floors and that clumsy guard or whoever it was that couldn’t keep their footing. I mean this- this shouldn’t fall on me! This is exactly why I prefer the Veirmont Gazette.” Lorenzo ranted and huffed before his eyes found the Morning Tea. His guilty pleasure of the Caesonia Newspaper. Charlotte had moved over to read as well. She had bit her lip, uncertain what to say. She had hoped that he would have understood what he had done after everything.

“What?! How could they?! Concubine?! Fu-” He stopped himself as he remembered the two women in his presence. “People can be so distasteful here… I wonder if we should just leave.” He hung his head.

Charlotte groaned. Though it irritated her that people may view her offer as such now, she knew they had bigger problems. She’d have to shake this off somehow.

Going back to Veirmont was a delightful dream, but one that would simply delay their problems. Charlotte knew she had to stub this Calbert problem in the toe here and now. Besides, she had promised Leo she’d help him too this summer. “I don’t think we should let them chase us home. Since when did we care what they think?” Charlotte’s words again charged Lorenzo with a well of confidence.

She wondered if Calbert had something to do with calling her a concubine. He had said something similar but she supposed others could have mistaken her gesture as well. As her gaze moved lower, she did a double take.

…Is he fucking Count Calbert?

“...They’ve lost their minds.” She commented dryly.

“Yes. They. Have!” Lorenzo’s face was full of determination as he stared piercingly into Charlotte’s eyes. “They have lost their minds if they believe they can chase the Vikenas off. Hmph, it’s clear this paper is biased against us… But we have made quite the impact.” Lorenzo stepped away from both Charlotte and Delilah as he began to slowly pace with his hands clasped behind his back like he was some sort of mastermind. Lorenzo had always rivaled Calbert’s ability to gaslight, except he only did it to himself.

“Despite the bias, we made the headline.” Lorenzo smirked amusingly. “We practically owned the night it seems! Not only that… We have an exclusive audience with the Alidasht royal family. Every week, until they depart. You see, Lottie…” He had his back to her now as he stopped in place. Looking over his shoulder he wore the smile of a fool. “...we Vikenas have returned and made the greatest impression yet.”

Charlotte managed a smile but seemed at a loss of words. “An impression of sorts....” Her gaze slid to Delilah who had a similar look in her eyes. It sunk in and perhaps even frightened her a little now more than ever how delusional Lorenzo could be. There was no way to spin what had been written into a positive manner. The headline was quite literally calling him a warmonger. However, diluting his optimistic view could be dastardly as well, so she chose to move on. “Well then. We have a whole day ahead of us, don’t we? Let us maintain a good impression.”

“Absolutely! Now that we've both found one another, we can begin attending some of today's events…” Lorenzo turned to face his body to the two and noticed his current appearance. The thought of remaining home nearly crossed his mind, but he buried it. “But first I must freshen up and- hmm… Delilah could you inform Nathaniel that Kier will need some grooming for this afternoon's race.” Lorenzo was feeling daring today.

“Certainly.” The maid set the newspaper down and then turned on her heels to do as he asked. Charlotte proceeded to collect it from its spot. She stared at the first page for a moment, frowning at it, then began to flip through.

As she scanned the events of the day, something delicious caught her eye. The imagery that crossed her mind led to her licking her lips. With sudden enthusiasm, she picked up her head and looked at Lorenzo, “There’s free pancakes at the park!” She hurried over to her stepfather and practically shoved the newspaper at him, brimming with excitement, “We must attend!” Charlotte exclaimed just before the room fell silent with Lorenzo staring down at the advertised event with an eerie expression on his face.

“Lady Charlotte Marie Vikena… You should know by now that I absolutely hate pancakes... but we can go.”

Zarai tried to sit further in her chair when King Edin looked at her, doing her best not to cringe under his gaze. Her mother, however, had done a complete one-eighty and was now beaming that her daughter had managed to catch the king's attention. Unfortunately, she found herself unable to think of anything meaningful to say. She didn't remember anything beyond arriving at the warehouse. If she had enough time to rake over her mind, perhaps she could remember something important.

Luckily, Shehzadi Mayet spoke up again, giving Zarai time to rummage through her memories, but the smoke was still present. It was strange, for Zarai at least. Over the years, she had built up quite a tolerance to alcohol, amongst other substances. This was the first time in years she drank enough to cause memory loss. The last time she had only forgotten her trip back home. Which only proved Shehzadi Mayet's words true.

Then it finally dawned on her. This wasn't a simple meeting between parents to scold their children for partying too hard. Their little outing had been dangerous for them, all of them including the children of the Danroses and Kadirs.

"Your Majesty—"

Unable to even get a word in, Zarai turned to Anastasia when she spoke up. She shook her head quickly, but the words were already pouring out of her mouth like a river, and no dam would stop them. All she could do was sit and watch the youngest of the Caesonian royals confess. Ya me chinge. Estas bien pendeja Zarai. She tried to intervene, but Anastasia did not seem to stop even to take a breath.

Zarai could feel her chest swell up and her nose flare when Anastasia was quickly escorted out after her confession. She willed herself to stay quiet despite the King motioning her to continue. She knew if she spoke, she'd agree with Anastasia. It was true that she had gone to fetch them all, but everyone had decided to accept the invitation and attend the event. None of them had expected this outcome, Anastasia being one of them; she had trusted her friend, and that friend had played her. Yet, the poor girl would still not speak their name.

Fortunately, both King and Queen had had enough of the morning calling for the culmination of their meeting, but the Alidasht royals were not pleased one bit. While they continued to argue, Zarai sat quietly staring at the door where Anastasia had been escorted out.

I need to see her.

Farim

Mentions: Sultan Raif Kadir @Tae, Mayet @13org, Hafiz @princess

Great...Farim thought to himself in the moment. He could tell as the words left his lips and countless eyes bore into his back as he held fast to his bow, only straightening as the Sultan spoke to him.

"I have not called for anyone's death so there is no need to guilt me with such..."

Farim's blood froze as the only man who he felt genuine respect and admiration for seemed to scold his choice of words. He knew his "father" would likly be snickering, cringing, or some foul mixture of both expressions at his actions. Despite his call for tact, he immediately went too heavy on the pleading, thinking there was a life at stake.

He waited a moment for everyone's piece to be said before responding in a brief moment of sincerity before he would find himself in a deeper hole than before. "Sultan, perhaps my words were hasty. I should've known better, and for that I am sorry. I trust your judgement more than any." He gave one more slight bow with his hand over his chest as he would turn to hear his cousin berate him slightly.

"Besides... There were already countless attempts to poison members of the Alidasht Royal Family and all of them were dealt with swiftly. The fact that we do not remember anything that happened last night would be enough to warrant the execution of every single person who was directly responsible for the party and the drinks if we were in Alidasht."

But this is not Alidasht Mayet.... He wanted to fight back, but now was not the time. He was already earning more and more negative attention. He certainly wanted to draw some towards him, but not piss everyone off in the process. He simply nodded to acknowledge her statement before begrudgingly turning his head towards his fathers voice.

The man's calculated ferocity and insistence on respect was something Farim knew he would take to his grave. It took every ounce of self control he had to step back as he listened to the prattling spew of words that his father so ungraciously spat. Even if the words were as well-knit as a fine silken robe he would like to toss the entire "garment" into the fire of his disdain.Same old song and dance. 'Respect me or die'.His father was a relic of the past he sought to hopefully one day overwrite. However his face remained neutral, despite the mention of an event he oh-so wished he could have bore witness to.

"Your duke still needs to be punished for humiliating and injuring my family last night. My brother may be merciful… but I do not forget nor easily forgive my enemies."

He simply stayed put, not a single smirk on his face, nor a remark from his mouth despite every cell in his body screaming to sass and belittle his father. Another time...another time... He looked on as he awaited for this overall awkward display of power and politics to simply just end already, slightly embarrassed at his own mishandling of words.

This was chaos; Nahir knew that much. Mayet's demands for them, while warranted, were not helping. Farim was subtle as ever, but she did not blame him for it. It was no secret that Hafiz had the temper of a dynamite stick. Then there was her father, with the patience of a saint, continued to prove why he had become Sultan as he demanded honesty from the King and Queen but was only met with more excuses until their own daughter caved in.

"That girl is being used. She doesn't even have the capacity to lie. Let alone to scheme something."

"Her loyalty to this so-called friend is foolish yet admirable." Nahir replied to her sister, eyes fixed on the Queen's face. The longer they stayed here, the worse things would get. Emotions were still high, and the lack of rest was not helping anyone. It'd be best to allow for a break to get all affected parties situated. The discovery of finding out that she'd been poisoned or drugged was still in the back of Nahir's mind, where it would stay until she was back in her chambers alone.

Her attention was pulled from the queen to Hafiz as he finished talking.

"Your duke still needs to be punished for humiliating and injuring my family last night. My brother may be merciful… but I do not forget nor easily forgive my enemies."

"Grand Vizier is right; we do not easily forgive our enemies," Nahir looked at her uncle with a calm expression, hands folded neatly in front of her. "but we must be sure who our enemy is." Pointing fingers at one another would not help with the investigation if they were to take part in it, and they would. The King and Queen could not deny this request now that their plan to shift the blame had been called out. Transparency and honesty were the least they could do to smooth things over with Alidasht.

If not handled with care, this whole situation could spiral into war.

"Fath— Sultan, I suggest we take Her Majesty's advice and move on to breakfast. An empty stomach can affect one's mood and decision-making, and I can see my uncle Hafiz, unfortunately, skipped his meal." She bowed her head to her father first, then to her uncle, not bothering to look at the latter directly.
