THE DARK WOODS

-

Hello and welcome to the Haynek Institute Of Research. Unlike typical scientific organizations, the Haynek Institute focuses less on indoor laboratories and facilities and more on field research and the great outdoors. As such, we boast the most up-to-date technology and equipment for on-site research and surveillance.

Because of the focus of our work, it is no surprise that most of our members are comprised of Catastrophe Messengers and explorers. We may not be as renowned and famous as the likes of Rhine Lab or Rhodes Island but the data we gather and the work we do is invaluable and used by organizations and countries all across Terra. We even sometimes collaborate with other scientific organizations on special research projects.

We will be honest with you, this line of work is fraught with danger. Most of the research involves Originium found in the wild, which are unrefined and potentially infectious, and the Catastrophes that plague this world. We ensure that all members rigorously practice safety procedures during any sort of research but we must acknowledge that things happen and casualties are had in the field. Again, we warn you of the dangers of the jobs in Haynek Institute.

And so our motto goes, Always Stay Safe!
Any mockery of the motto's acronym is grounds for termination

Greetings Operator! The Haynek Institute thanks you for your continued service to the organization, but the work is never over! You have been selected, along with others, to take part in another research operation. This endeavor will take you to the remote forests of Kazimierz, the land of Knights and chivalry.

This operation is concerned with strange reports of Originium activity in the village of Riventor, one of the many isolated villages in the Kazimierz countryside. Not much is known about Riventor, only that it is self-sufficient and is more isolated than the other villages. Riventor rarely comes out to trade and there are no remarkable locations near it so it does not get many visitors.

However, aerial surveillance reveals that there are Originium deposits in the forests around Riventor. But the strange part is, these Originium deposits seem to change size or outright disappear every time the aerial surveillance takes photos. The inconsistency of the results appear to stem from the inclement weather over the village.

That is why we are sending a ground team to confirm the presence of the Originium and determine its true properties. The consistent bad weather over the village may also be a sign for a possible oncoming Catastrophe so that should also be investigated too.

Good luck and don't forget, Always Stay Safe! Any mockery of the motto's acronym is grounds for termination

@Bartimaeus
If you like furries animal people like I do, then you're in for a treat!

@Asura
I think I saw you in that other Arknights RP. Really liked your character there (I liked all of the chars there actually but hey).

@Rune_Alchemist
Good to have you back and onboard.

Hey there all! It's ya boy Paul Haynek, back at it again with another RP this time set in the world of Arknights, a Chinese tower-defense mobile game filled with animal people (including full-on furries) that are plagued by Catastrophes, forcing them to live in nomadic and mobile cities.

What are Catastrophes, you ask? In the world of Arknights, 'Catastrophe' is the term for natural disasters that leave behind a mysterious but powerful mineral called 'Originium'. The people of Terra (the world's name) harnessed Originium and made all sorts of stuff. Unfortunately, exposure to Originium can lead to a disease called 'Oripathy' where Originium slowly transforms the infected's body into the mineral.

So far, there is no known cure for Oripathy and if the infected dies, the Originium within becomes extra infectious. Thus, discrimination against the infected is heavy throughout Terra.

You can read more about the world of Arknights over here. If you're already familiar with Arknights (or have already max-potentialed SilverAsh) then that's great!

This RP will be smaller in scale compared to the game, however. Players will be a group of Operators of the Haynek Institute (probably need to change the name to something less egotistical) sent to a very remote village in Kazimierz to investigate strange reports about the Originium there.

Of course, things won't go as planned and the player Operators must find a way to survive and escape from the Dark Woods.

This is just an interest check. Character sheets and in-depth information will be on the OOC if it gets posted.
Hello...?
Hey guys, sorry for the late update. Like I said, it was pretty meaty. I also have an announcement:

I'm packing up for a trip to the U.S. and will be applying for citizenship. That means I'll be really busy so there will probably be no update next week.

Sorry for the inconvenience.

The cooking contest was located in an empty corner of the port, now refurbished to accommodate the competition. For the audience, there were rows of simple wood chairs but they were not all occupied. For the contestants, there were four tables lined in a single row filled with culinary materials from pans to spatulas and various ingredients including vegetables, a few kinds of meat and all sorts of condiments like salt and spices.

You take your place in one of the tables. An apron was provided for you to wear and after putting it on, a familiar face greets you. "Hey, blondie." Nero got into another table and put on his contest apron. "Betcha didn't expect me here, did you? I thought I should put my cooking skills to the test. Although, considering that you and the spider beside me are the competition, I doubt I'll be tested that hard."

The table beside Nero's was occupied by the Ushi-Oni. She was the typical individual of her species, she was large and ferocious-looking. Her lower, spider-half was covered in thick black hair with each leg ending in a sharp claw. Her upper, human-half had dark green skin tattooed with markings. A pair of horns was on her head, its base covered by black, unkempt hair. Her only piece of clothing was the free apron of the contest but you assume she had fur or hairs covering her modesty.

She lazily stared at Nero and he was too busy preparing to notice. Perhaps he might be in trouble later?

At the farthest table from you was the Kikimora contestant. She was an ordinary-looking Kikimora with her maid outfit and tufts of brown feathers coming out of her sleeves. Behind her was her long, fluffy feathered tail and her scaled feet were barely visible under her long dress. Fair-skinned, she wore a disarming smile on her face as she patiently waited for the contest to begin.

"Got anything to say before I blow you out of here, blondie?"

A Test Of Strength
~@Restalaan (DIT)~

"Step right up! Step right up!" The knight said to the crowd gathered around the high striker. "Think you're tough? Then step right up and test your strength against Ian North's Test Your Miiiiight!"

All this was happening in a small plaza in the middle of Boreal Port. The onlookers were both men and monster, drawn to the attraction to see who was strong enough to ring the bell and because the knight called Ian North was yelling really loudly. You push your way past the crowd to participate in the contest.

When you made your way to the fore, the other contestants were already waiting. There was the Minotaur you saw earlier, a bull monster whose strength was the stuff of stories. There was also the Jinko, a tiger-like monster from the east and also said to be mighty. Then there's the Kikimora who... aren't really known for their raw brawn. "We already have ourselves three contestants! Three warriors of incredible powerrrrrr! Who else wants to join?"

Spotting you, Ian quickly pointed a finger. "You there, little boy! You look like you can knock a few heads. You wanna try your strength in this here game?"

The competition was located just outside of Boreal Port, in a clear grassy field. In a way, this reminded you of a previous quest where you had to retrieve an arrow for the client.

A small audience was present but there were only a few chairs, leading to some simply sitting on the grass and lots of complaining. A tap on the shoulder gets your attention and once you turn around, it was none other than Sir Reed. "Hail, Viera. I, too, would like to test my skills with the bow. As a knight, it would be beneficial for me to learn all sorts of weapons."

A familiar figure hopped out from behind Sir Reed. "Heya, Freyr! Don't mind me, I'm just here to watch." Haley glanced at the contest, particularly the other contestants. "Whew! You've got a fight ahead of you two. Those two could shoot arrows at things they can't even see." You do not know if she was exaggerating but if she was not, that would truly make the competition fierce.

The Elf contestant was a gorgeous woman wearing a green ornate dress styled like the leaves of a verdant forest. With hair of green and fair skin, she peacefully sat on the grass polishing her bow to perfection. You could tell that her bow was a personal one. From a distance though, it appeared a simple white bow but it was more than that. It was crafted well and had intricate markings that made it hers.

The Cupid one was a typical of their race. Save for her brown skin, everything else about her was pink. Pink hair, pink hat, pinkish white gloves and knee-high boots, pink wings and pink clothes. Clothes that covered so little, she might as well be wearing only her underwear were it not for the belts and accessories she also wore. Her bow, too, was pink and decorated with hearts, the symbol of her patron goddess.

There was also that Kikimora. An ordinary, fair-skinned Kikimora with her maid outfit and tufts of brown feathers coming out of her sleeves. Behind her was her long, fluffy feathered tail and her scaled feet were barely visible under her long dress. She wore a disarming smile on her face as she patiently waited for the contest to begin, holding her bow and doing nothing else.

"Sir Freyr, what do you think the chances are of that Cupid shooting either of us instead of the target?" Sir Reed asked of you as he inspected his bow. You doubt the question is serious. But could it?

The trivia contest took place indoors inside an empty, unused hall within the port repurposed for the competition. It was not spacious but it had enough room to host the event.

Four podiums for the contestants were arranged in a line at the other side of the hall with rows and rows of chairs for the audience in front of them. The chairs were almost completely empty which was disappointing but perhaps the crowd just haven't arrived yet?

The other contestants were already present. The Owl Mage and the Lich were in a conversation. The Owl Mage looked like any other of her kind, thick plumages of brown to light brown feathers covered her body yet she still wore clothes underneath. You were unsure where the feathers began and where they ended. Meanwhile, the deathly-skinned Lich wore a long hooded cloak that covered her entire body save for her face and her arms that clutched a grimoire.

The Kikimora, however, appeared ordinary with her maid outfit and tufts of brown feathers coming out of her sleeves. Behind her was her long, fluffy feathered tail and her scaled feet were barely visible under her long dress. She wore a disarming smile on her face as she stood behind her podium and waited patiently for the contest to begin.

"Hello! How's the festival going for you guys?"
Ozzy Skyway

Your greeting was immediately noticed and the Owl Mage responded in kind. "It has went well so far. Although, we have been waiting here for--" She stopped as she and the Lich stared at you for a few uncomfortable moments. They probably realized you were no ordinary monster.

They then approached, no, lunged at you. They immediately stuck their faces very close to yours as they tried to discern the anomaly that stood before them. "How is this possible? You are a Harpy yet..." The Owl Mage trailed off and continued to stare hard at you.

"Is this some sort of trick? Are you using some sort of illusion magic?" The Lich questioned you. "I do not detect any cast spells on you, though. Is this part of the contest? Are we to try to decipher what you are? If so, then this truly is a test of my intellect."

"Tell us, little Harpy. Who are you?"

~@13org (ADA), @Rezod92~

"None of the contests really interest me." Bart sighed. "I think I'll just advertise our Guild to all the people here. Try to attract clients and attention. You guys are free to join me if you'd like." With that, Bart left the group.

The others have left as well earlier, leaving only Ada, Kira and Talia. "Mmm, I have no interest in any of the contests either and I don't... wanna hang around Bart right now. You two are going to the cooking contest, right?" She said to Kira and Ada. "Maybe I'll just come with you two."

"Maybe we can get another balloon on the way." Talia said, patting Ada on the head. "Say, Kira. Have you any idea what species of monster she is?"

Neil and the Altissima sisters worked hard, fetching messages and materials to and fro. All to keep the festival going smoothly. Neil mostly just carried and pushed the Liliraune all over while the latter were the ones holding the stuff. It was all exhausting and fortunately, the trio were given a break for several minutes.

Plopping down on a bench in a plaza, Neil made a long sigh to catch his breath. "Damn, that was harder than I thought." He remarked. "Had I known that I had to do this much running, I would've joined Ozzy in his exercises with Yang." Wiping some sweat off his brow, Neil continued. "But you know what they say, the things that are worth having don't come easy."

After several moments of panting, Neil glanced over to Vivian. "Hey uhh, I know that you wanted to come to join the cooking contest so uhh, I'll try to make it up to you, alright? Ehehe, sorry." Despite the words, Neil did not seem to know exactly how to do that. But that was a matter for later, Neil then looked at Sylvia.

"So why did you really want to come with me?" Neil asked the question of questions. "I doubt you have any questions for Riñas. Err, do you?"
@Rezod92

A slight one since this update's pretty meaty. But it's almost done so it's coming.

The fight between the hooded man and his mooks against Jarde and Sir Fleuri began.

The hooded man opened up with a shot from his crossbow at Fleuri who narrowly evaded it. The two lunged at each other and their duel began, leaving Jarde to take on the rest of the hooded warrior's men. Jarde felt he was more suited in duels but then again, his specialty was striking at the sides to support his allies. A head-on fight was not his element but this was the situation he was in and there was little he could do about it.

Jarde bent backwards to evade a horizontal sword swing before making a leg sweep to knock the enemy mercenary off his feet. His next attacker had an axe and went for an overhead swing which Jarde blocked with his sickles before kicking the attacker's left leg to force a crouch. Jarde finished it with a rising knee to the chin.

More were coming at him, but there were also some going after Sir Fleuri. A single, distracting blow from them could tip the duel against the Iron Rose knight and Jarde was not going to let that happen. He needed all the mooks' attention on him.

He ducked and weaved through swings until he reached his targets. They were focused in getting a hit on Sir Fleuri and so they did not see Jarde's flying kick that knocked one of them away. Realizing that Jarde was onto them, they broke off from Fleuri's duel and went after Jarde. Now the senior knight can focus on the duel but unfortunately, Jarde was more outnumbered than before.

He needed to take whittle them down as fast as he could, to reduce the mob's combat effectiveness. Jarde aimed for their hands, their feet and joints. They would be expecting fast killing blows so they did not expect being attacked on their seemingly non-vital parts. Jarde's sickles sliced and cut, leaving mercenaries screaming on the floor and clutching their limbs.

But quantity was beginning to prove its quality when a mercenary managed to land a blow, a sword slash to the back while Jarde was busy with another. His light armor managed to protect him, but Jarde realized that they got a hit in. He needed to up his game. The mercenary now tried for a thrust with his blade but Jarde, almost a blur in speed, spun to dodge before slashing the mercenary's leg and then his sword arm. All within half a second.

The mooks' numbers were thinning now. All Jarde needed to do now was finish them off and maybe help out Sir Fleuri against the hooded warrior.

"Oh? What might you be? Never seen or heard your like before." Sir Reed remarked when Ada inspected him. He showed no resistance and allowed the Hushabye to tap and touch his armor. "It's pretty good armor, ain't it? Not anything to write home about, but it has saved my life a couple of times."

"You wanna come and play with us?"
Ditzy Stoneclub

"I was welcomed no questions asked so I say we could do the same. Welcome! My name is Ozmodius Skyway. Scholar and Socialogist. Let me know if you need a question answered or, ya know- " He unfurled his wings. A bird's eye view on anything."
Ozzy Skyway

"More male monsters... How is this possible? What is this place?" Sir Reed marveled at Ditzy and Ozzy. "I should really bring this back to Ortus. Let everyone know." He muttered to himself before addressing the two male monsters. "O-Oh, it's a pleasure to meet you two as well!"

Once he was accepted into the Guild, Sir Reed made a sharp bow to everyone. "My gratitude. I promise, I shan't be a disappointment much less a burden to the Guild."

"I apologize for my demeanor, Sir Reed. Certain events has left me...wary of knights. I judge you too hastily and was rude in my conduct. Hence, allow me to reintroduce myself and start over, Sir Reed. I'm Yang Bethlehem, a disciple of White Tiger temple and a member of The Guild."
Yang Bethlehem

Sir Reed laughed. "Not a problem, Madam Bethlehem. And truly, a smile and a warm face suits you more."

The guild reached Boreal Port by midday. They could already hear the cheers festivities as they were entering and upon their arrival, they saw the crude yet charming decorations for the festival. Buntings, strings with colored flags, hung overhead which made the small port vibrant just for this day. A few balloons were tied to some posts while garlands of pretty flowers were placed in the doors of some buildings, usually an establishment rather than a home.

Monsters and humans, young and old, filled the streets with laughter. Some waved at the guild, welcoming them to Boreal Port. For one day, this small

"Ah, it's the guild!" A Dark Priest, familiar to some of the guild members, came to greet the new arrivals. She had a happy smile on her face but she also appeared quite winded with sweat visible on her forehead. "I'm very glad that you managed to came. I know that some of you already know me but as a quick introduction, I am Riñas Chavez. A Dark Priest presiding a church here in Boreal Port. I am also one of the organizers of the festival so I am quite busy right now. But please, enjoy yourselves here."

"Ah, I know! There are several contests you can partake in. Here, let me show you them real quick."

"Now then, I must get back to my duties. I hope you have a good time here."

Just when Riñas was about to leave, Neil quickly grabbed her hand to stop her. The sudden move caught everyone's attention, looking on as to what Neil wanted with the Dark Priest. "L-Listen..." Neil stuttered out the words, feeling all eyes on him. "W-Why don't I help you out? I-- Because I need to ask something of you."

Confusion was the next order of business but Riñas accepted Neil's strange offer. "V-Very well, come with me then."

Neil nodded to the rest of the guild before joining the Dark Priest. It was clear he was pursuing something. The silence that followed Neil's departure was broken by Haley. "So, where's everyone off to? I'm not sure where to head first so I think I'll be joining someone to wherever they go."
