Honestly I think the funniest thing about all this is that I'm not even a huge fan of the Punisher, I just wanted to try my hand at writing some John Woo shit.

Sometimes that makes for a better approach than getting a textbook expert on the character. Especially in a game like this, where everyone's supposed to be a new version of themselves. If I weren't so dead-set on hijacking every possible game I'm in with a new version of Batman, playing someone whose mythos I'm unfamiliar with would actually be pretty tempting in this setting. I can't see playing The Hulk in a non-UOU game, for instance, but playing him here would be alot less intimidating.

Then again, I'm not really a risk-taker. If I'm not playing Batman, I'm usually playing someone else within my wheelhouse. IE: the famous superheroes that damn near everybody knows.

Best Character: @HenryJonesJr's Spider-Woman
I think everyone in the game adores the shit out of Gwen in this game, and I'm not ashamed to admit that her posts are probably the ones I anticipate reading the most. HJJ's not only managed to circumvent any expectations I had of simply transferring the Spider-Gwen concept over to a new universe, he's done the impossible - he's made me give less than an iota of a shit that Peter Parker isn't under the mask. Gwen feels as authentically befitting of the great power/great responsibility mantra as Pete did whenever he first donned the webs, but with a new perspective that gives her soap opera antics a renewed sense of energy and intrigue. We've all seen Parker bemoan his many girl troubles and the health of his elderly aunt, but Gwen has the weight of worrying about a cop father and the tremendous guilt of hiding a tragic secret from her best friend-turned-boyfriend ontop of a gang war sweeping the underbelly of New York. Gwen doesn't always manage to win out, like her male 616 counterpart, but she takes it all in stride and gets back up with more determination than ever. Henry deserves all the credit in the world for creating a new version of this concept that feels like it's best ever, and a version I'd happily buy a comic of every month.

Best Character:

@HenryJonesJr

This one was close battle between the characterization of Green Lantern, The Fantastic Four, and Spider-Woman. Eventually it came to Spider-Woman due to my affection of the Spider-Man continuity, my interest in seeing the posts each week (sometimes soonr), and Henry's skillful work in bringing that corner of the universe alive. I've mulled over the same concept before, but Henry's done it more actively and imaginatively than I could have. It's a great character written by a great writer.

Best Character Concept:

@Morden Man

To see Morden's Fantastic Four from the New Frontier universe again was a surprise. A very good one. Much like Byrd I love timey-wimey bullshit and I also happen to like the Fantastic Four as characters. How they have been handled on the “Ultimate” universe Earth has been interesting and inspiring – not just because its a New Frontier concept or a Fantastic Four concept but rather because it is a solid and well-written concept all around. I always look forward to see what statement Morden is making every week, though my favorite is no doubt when Reed is mulling over the idea that maybe he shouldn't return to his universe.

Best Character Development:

@Lord Wraith

What everyone else said is pretty spot on. Thor's had a good journey so far and I'm curious to see how the pieces all fall in place. I think he's probably the character I'm most curious about in terms of the end of his starting arc, which is saying a lot since everyone here has brought their a-game.

Best Story:

@Bounce

“I'm only a few solar cycles from retirement.” I jokingly uttered to Bounce in one of our chats. I think everyone can say the lanterns & justicars element is really working and he's put out a hell of a story. If you aren't caught up with it, I won't spoil anything, but it is a story that I absolutely adore. Bounce has tried his hand at this idea before, but I think in 2018 the story has finally become fleshed out and things have continued to be entertaining scene-to-scene.

Best Post:

@Hexaflexagon

Hex is one of the writers on RPG who is pushing me to be better – and his Black Widow proves exactly why. I would say my personal favorite post of his take on Black Widow would be this one in particular.

The John Lees Memorial MVP Award*:

@Master Bruce

Bringing back the Hype-style Superhero Sandbox RP's is no easy task. I've tried, Andy's tried, Wraith's tried and we've all pretty much had the same result with the games burning out within the first month (sometimes sooner). I'm not sure what black magic our caped crusader has in his batcave, but whatever it is it worked and I want some of it. To have a RP be this active, friendly, and committed is amazing. This isn't just dumb luck, either. Bruce has continued to push us to get our posts on time, communicate, and reviewed in a timely fashion. Ultimate DC may have teetered out in 2013, but I guess this is proof positive that the second try is sometimes better than the first.

Here’s me, writing my award nominations when I really need to be working on my next post.

Before I start in on specific awards, I just gotta say, it’s been incredibly difficult to choose. I love reading the IC. We have some genuinely amazing, powerful stories going on here, and many characters brought to life in ways I’ve never seen before. I usually find myself wishing we had a full length novel from each of you about your characters. Trust me, even if I don’t mention you below, I’m sure I’ve got something great to say about your character.

Best Character: @Morden Man as The Fantastic Four
Technically this isn’t a fair contest. Where everyone else writes one great character or another, Morden pulls off four. My only real exposure to the FF has been the mid-2000s cartoon, the live action movies, and Reed Richards time as The Maker, but Morden’s posts have me itching for any kind of great FF story I can get my hands on. Despite relatively little screen time for each member, as they need to share the space, I get a real feeling of distinct character from each one, even in supporting characters like Guy Gardner and Hill.

Best Character Concept: @Eddie Brock as Captain America
When coming upon this thread to apply, the first exemplar sheet I looked at was Eddie’s Cap. The idea and the possibility space of it was incredible. Most incarnations of the Captain that I’m familiar with see him as a big Boy Scout fighting for truth, justice, and the American way, but this is a Cap that I think fits this RP much more than the standard version would. UOU presents a world that has had its information ruthlessly policed by two overarching international organizations for decades, almost like 1984. It wouldn’t feel quite right to have a more traditional Cap in a world like that, so instead Eddie gives us an incredible take on the character perfectly suited for this world. I’m chomping at the bit for more Cap posts, I can’t wait to see more of this character.

Best Character Development: @HenryJonesJr as Spider-Woman
I’m biased in favor of this character, as someone finally starting the crawl out of his teenage years. HJJ captures what it’s like to be a teenager better than most actual teenagers. Gwen bleeds believability, it’s no stretch at all to imagine someone like her walking around the halls of my old High School. It’s fascinating to watch her grow in all the little ways, dealing with her mixed emotions around Peter, her increasingly complicated relationship with her Dad, and juggling all of her responsibilities as a freakin’ superhero. Gwen’s story has all the character focus of the best Spider-Man stories, and I’m excited to see where HJJ’s writing takes her next.

Best Story: @Simple Unicycle as Punisher
One of the first comics I ever read was Punisher MAX. Garth Ennis writes the Punisher with unrelenting ferocity, brutalizing his opponents in ways that often made me turn away in horror. To me, this was The Punisher at his core, a deeply damaged person exacting his revenge on the Universe for dealing him a bad hand in the most violent way possible. I’ll sing Garth Ennis’ praises until I die, but damn if Simple doesn’t give him a run for his money. It can be extremely difficult to appropriately communicate action in writing, since it’s usually more given to visual media, but Simple writes Punisher with such unrelenting force that I can practically see Punisher leaping off of the screen and annihilating bad guys before my eyes. It’s just as good as watching John Wick, and it doesn’t let up, issue to issue, I can’t get enough. My one wish is that at some point, we get to see Frank square up against Barracuda.

Best Post: @Byrd Man as John Constantine; The Curse of Frederick Waltham
I sat here for too long looking at the blank space below this choice. I went for this link immediately once I saw a “Best Post” category, but I find myself without any idea where to begin. There’s so much to love here, from Waltham’s desperation to Stowe’s abject terror. Perhaps the most amazing part is that this post doesn’t even focus all that much on Constantine himself. 10/10, would read again.

The John Lees Memorial MVP Award*: @Nightrunner
This was a contentious category, but y’all be sleepin’ on Nightrunner. This guy takes all the abuse and jokes for his edginess like a champion, and I’ve felt that he provides a certain color to the OOC that no one else can quite bring out. Cheers to the Forget-Me-Not squad.

Using my knowledge of about the first three pages of the IC (well, in some cases I either read ahead or, in Henry's case, kept up with one specific storyline), I decided to finally put together a list of nominations. You're gonna find a lot of the same people as have been on others' lists, but once I finish the IC I'm gonna go over and do a 'runner-up' list which should basically just be considered my nominations part two.

Best Character: @HenryJonesJr's Spider-Gwen Spider-Woman
Pretty much everyone has said everything that I want to say far better than I ever could, but still, I'll try. Before I settled on my take on Punisher, I toyed around with a Spider-Man idea, and I am really glad I didn't go with it because 1) you would've crushed me and 2) your take on a webslinger is far better than anything I could have cooked up. Pretty much every post from you has been gold, and I am absolutely honored to have been the first person to write a crossover with you. Not gonna lie, that was one of my favorite IC interactions in my (admittedly small amount of) years roleplaying. Seriously dude, keep it up. Oh, one last note: we gotta do another crossover at some point, maybe with less derelict buildings crashing down.

Best Character Concept: @Superboy's Blue Beetle
You know what I'm a sucker for? Blue Beetle. You know what else I'm a sucker for? Alien lifeforms taking a human body as their host and potentially hijacking it... Okay the second one is pretty specific but you know what I mean. I haven't reached any of your posts yet as I'm still not too far into the IC, but man, that concept alone is just... Amazing. I'm gonna drown you in likes, good sir.

Best Character Development: @Lord Wraith's Thor
Yeah, like Henry, everyone has said exactly what I wanna say way better than I can and really, I'm not gonna try with this one, because I know I'd butcher it. All I can say is Wraith, I've seen you write some good characters, but this... This is the best.

Best Story: @Byrd Man and John Constantine's assorted misadventures
Considering I'm so far behind I literally had to start back at page one, I am really disappointed in myself for not reading Byrd's posts along with Henry's. He really knows how to tell a good noir crime drama in the supernatural underbelly of a city, and he sprinkles it with just the right amount of dark humor. Honestly, kinda jealous, because I've been cooking up an idea for Year Two but Byrd seems to have taken the spot as local detective man (and rightfully so). Cheers, ya bastard.

Best Post: @AndyC's Toy Soldiers Part 4
On the surface, this seems like a normal post. Supes flies around and punches evil robots from Hell and stuff or something and then Ẁ̶̡̢Ḩ̶͞͠A̴̶̷͠T̶̶̢̨͞ ̧̀͘͡T̶̢H͏̸͘E̶ ̛͡F̀Ų̷̴͘Ç̶̕͟K̢͝ ͏͝I̧͜͡S̸̛͜͡ ̸̶́͡Ǵ̵́͞O̸̢̢Ì͏̧͏̶Ń͟G̕҉͟ ̧̧̨O̢͜N͏̵ ̵̸̡̢͘J̸̡̢̡͜E̷̡̢S̨Ư͜S̷̨̛͜ ̶͏̢C̸̷̡̕H̸̶̨́̕R̴̴̨I͠҉͏S̡͞T̢ ͜͢Ẃ͠H̷̴̵́͢Ą̵T̵͢͢͝ ̵͞͞͝҉Ẃ̷͘͞H̢̀͢͏Ą̨́͜T̴͜ ̶̕͝T̨͢H̴̡̀͘E͏̡̀́͢ ̴̷F̸̴̧͡Ú̸̡C̶͢K̀͘͞ ͝҉̴̶Ẁ̷̧͝Ḩ͠͏͝A͟͢͢͡T̡̧͡ Seriously Andy. You did a good job on this. Honestly kinda jealous of it actually, considering I posted my (far inferior) fourth wall breaking post right after yours. Can't wait to see what you do with Mxyzptlk either.

The John Lees Memorial MVP Award: @Master Bruce
Boring and vanilla choice is boring and vanilla. But really, I was never a part of the Hype games of yesteryear, but from what I've heard, they were some of those amazing, once-in-a-lifetime games that are just the most fun you've ever had, and no one has been able to capture that spirit again. So, to hear that such a beloved experience that quite a few of you cherish is coming back in style and I'm brought along for the ride, well, it warms my little heart. Good on you for bringing nostalgic fun back to some of the old-timers and introducing it to the newcomers, Brucie. Oh, and sidenote, you write what is honestly my favorite Batman ever. You've probably heard that a million times before but here you go, hear it again.

Genuinely surprised given how many of us who didn't participate in the Hype Games have read the backlogs for just that reason. At any rate, you (as well as Byrd, Andy, and Bounce) were among the influences that pushed my writing to get better. Hell, you and Andy, were the sole reasons for me to attempt writing in first person perspective. I owe a lot to you and these games, but that goes without saying.

Oh boy. So I still don’t have my laptop, and as much as I wanna add my votes to the mix, I’m wayyy too behind IC to consider it. That said, I do want to mention some of the highlights so far, in no particular order.

@HenryJonesJr’s Spider-Woman. Everyone’s already said everything I could’ve added, but man. That you were able to make Gwen such a likeable, layered character that feels right as our resident web-slinger is just... it’s awesome. The one positive I can think of for having so much reading to catch up on is knowing that I have a whole bunch of Spider-Woman’s adventures waiting for me. Hell yeah.

@Eddie Brock’s Captain America. I love the concept. I love Garth Ennis’ Fury: My War Gone By, and while I don’t know whether or not that was an influence here, seeing Steve get that treatment brings me joy. And like Morden said a while back, the Sicario vibes these posts have are freaking awesome.

Speaking of @Morden Man... his Fantastic Four. It’s all been said by a bunch of people already, but the concept kicks ass – and that the posts are great is a huge bonus, too. Loving it, dude.

@Lord Wraith’s Thor. I’m a sucker for Norse mythology, and Nate’s heard a lot about it from me, lol, so much that I’m surprised (and glad) that he isn’t sick of me yet. And even though his Thor takes more influence from the comics than it does the myths, I’ve been having a blast reading about Blake and Thor, and can’t wait to see them further along in their journey.

@Bounce’s Green Lantern. The way he can describe characters and settings so succintly and effectively makes me angrier than I can properly explain, and that he tells his stories just as well is the icing on the cake. I’d strangle you if I could, Bounce. Stop writing so good.

@Byrd Man’s Constantine. The only thing I really need to say here is:
“JACK HAWKSMOOOOOOOOR”

I’m... I’m a fan. (You write real great, too, I guess).

@Sep’s Flash has been a fun read from the get-go, and I think that part of that has been his sheer enthusiasm. It’s just really, really fun and endearing. Iris feels natural as the Flash, and the Reverse Flash plot is damn intriguing. Keep it up, dude.

@Inkarnate’s Wonder Woman is an interesting spin. The posts I’ve read so far have been mostly outside of Bekka’s perspective, taking the time to build the world around her, and I’ve been really enjoying it. I really want to see more of her and her corner of the One Universe, so kudos, Mike.

@Simple Unicycle’s Punisher made me mad at first, because I’m a firm believer that Ennis’ Punisher is the only way to write the Punisher, but then I read his posts and I wasn’t anymore. Gun-fu + Frank = win, and I always feel like busting out some popcorn when I read his posts. Good stuff.

@AndyC, @Master Bruce, @BlackSam3091, and some others I’m sure I’m forgetting because I’m not running on much sleep are getting mentions, too, because their writing’s always top-notch and I’ve enjoyed their posts immensely.

So there’s my two cents. Just wanted to share the love, really.

Because Mama Sep raised me right. I wanna take a minute to respond to some of the votes I got. That's all this post is, so you can skip it if you're not interested.

The John Lees Memorial MVP Award: As much as I appreciate Master Bruce's hard work and dedication to bringing one of the best RPs I have participated in within the last couple years, for me this award has to go to @Sep. There's a reason the Surfer arc was set around the Flash and that's because Sep brings heart to this RP, he's active in both the IC and OOC and he's always there to bounce ideas with and just generally a far more agreeable person than I ever could be. Both Sep and Flash and the MVPs of this RP in my eyes and I look forward to seeing more of them moving forward. There's no doubt in my mind that whatever team forms first, Flash will be a cornerstone thanks to the incredible work and dedication of Sep.

I feel like love has blinded you, and I'm totally okay with that. In seriousness, this means a lot and thankyou. I'm sure you know that while Mordens my MVP you're up there too. You've been a real help over the last couple of years everytime I join one of these games, a great person to bounce ideas off and talk too. Besides, just incase anyone got it lost in the OOC I owe you credit for putting the idea of Iris West as The Flash into my head by memeing. So there is that.

It gives me a confidence boost for someone who feels that his writing isn't quite up to par with everyone elses.

Best Character: The Flash

Wraith mentioned that Sep is the heart of the RP in a lot of ways. I agree, and would say that his Flash is close to being the heart of the IC thread. I was a bit afraid that Iris as Flash was going to be gimmicky, but Sep shut me the hell up the second he hit the ground running (pun) with Iris. I don't know if you guys know this, but he's doing something with the Reverse Flash that's gonna be great. But, seriously, you're doing an awesome job. If we get the chance to start playing villains, you best believe I'm going to take over the Rogues.

R.I.P Flash if Byrds in control of the Rogues - If anyone is wondering whats happening with them, when I felt that the 'Year One' would last a lot longer they were going to appear, but with this iteration of the game going till around September, I elected to have them be a Year Two/Season Two thing so that I could do them justice, or have Byrd take them over and kill me. Again like with Wraith, I want to say thankyou in your own little message and that I appreciate this coming from you.

Iris has been a little difficult, but I feel like I'm getting into the groove with her now.

There’s a fantastic energy in this RP, and I think a lot of that can be traced back to Sep. He’s put a massive shift in, both IC and OOC, and I can’t commend him enough for the effort he’s been putting in. I’ll be honest, I was sceptical when I realised his take on Flash was going to feature Iris under the cowl, thinking that she was just going to be a gender-flipped Barry Allen, but I’m quite happy to have been proven wrong. Iris under Sep’s pen is her own woman, with her own morals and values, and while similar to Barry in some regards, is entirely unique from him in others. Couple that with his good-natured contributions in the OOC – and I do believe a healthy OOC makes a healthy RP – and you’ve got a winning combination. Keep up the great work buddy.

Again, thanks for the energy comment. I kinda feel bad getting praise for being active in the OOC when over the last four/five days I've been hella busy and not posting in the OOC. But I'll take the compliment damn it! The credit to the OOC idea was certainly @Master Bruce who had the good idea to have an active OOC rather than a discord, which I honestly think has made a massive difference. Everyone these days is all about Discord, before that IRCs were an active thing. It's obvious from the rate this OOC and IC has gone that something has been missing from the guild, and honestly? I think it's people. Everyone just sits in their private discord channels talking to eachother and not really roleplaying.

In terms of Iris, I've been trying to avoid similarities to Barry but then even in the modern iterations I sometimes find it difficult to pick up what I need to tell how she'd act in situations, and she can't always ask Barry or Wells just because of how fast she acts. I appreciate knowing that while there are some similarities, which I too have seen, that she feels like her own character.

@Sep’s Flash has been a fun read from the get-go, and I think that part of that has been his sheer enthusiasm. It’s just really, really fun and endearing. Iris feels natural as the Flash, and the Reverse Flash plot is damn intriguing. Keep it up, dude.

I am enthused. Thanks for the vote, I'd give you a vote but I already did that.

Best Character: The Punisher (@Simple Unicycle).
Honestly, this category was the hardest for me to decide on just one, as there are any number of characters who came to mind. Thor (@Lord Wraith), Superman (@AndyC), and Blue Devil (@Retired) being just a couple that gave me a hard time here.

Best Character Concept: Ghost Rider/Vigilante (@DocTachyon).
I'm really digging the exploration of this hybrid mythos. But, this was another category where I had a hard time making up my mind. Spider-Gwen (@HenryJonesJr) and Blue Beetle (@Superboy) were the closer runner's up for me.

Best Character Development: Wonder Woman (@Inkarnate).
I've said this privately already, but I really like when a character is explored through the perspectives of the characters around them. So I've really enjoyed those Wondy posts where the narrative is pushed forward through the use of the people around Wondy, rather than Wondy herself.

Best Story: The Fantastic Four (@Morden Man).

Best Post: John Constantine (@Byrd Man)

The John Lees Memorial MVP Award: @Simple Unicycle for bringing that avatar back. @Master Bruce for bringing the Hype back so successfully.

Thank you for the kind words. About John not being the focus, I think some of my favorite moments from the Hellblazer comic are always when John gets out of the way and lets the characters get their comeuppance. That's pretty much what I was going for there. The scene with Waltham at the typewriter was also inspired by this really bad VH1 sci-fi anthology series from like 2000 called Strange Frequency. It involved a piece of sheet music Hendrix wrote before he died, and Roger Daltrey as a hammy as fuck devil.
