When in doubt, INTJ all the way.

Not sure I'd want to apply Myers-Briggs to character sheets myself, but I'd love to sit in on a field test. It is one way to shorthand.

Well, in my case is shorthand for "behave as yourself".

I'd like to see myself screw something like that up.

Hate to sound like that guy that suppresses creativity and all that, but just because you make a "unique" or "alternative" character doesn't automatically make it good. I've seen many people come up with these gimmicks for their characters, and give them little personality or depth beyond it, but act like their characters are better because they're "different."

No, you're just making a badly written special snowflake.

@Mr Allen J excuse me, my character has heterochromia and it makes them super special. Other children bullied my character because of it, and it deeply scarred my character. But even though they act like they have no emotions, deep inside they really want to make friends.

If you dare say that that isn't a good character, I swear...

It's some 'hehh....... not bad, kid.......' shit.

I really, really hate watching when veteran players of a certain genre start unnecessarily ganging up on new RPers who don’t know the ropes yet. Like, the level of harshness and rudeness in some of the writing is totally out of proportion to some of the naive errors committed. It makes me really sad, seeing that happen. I mean, we were all new RPers once, or familiar with RPing but new to the site. Is such a level of spite and disrespect really necessary for trivial mistakes we’ve all made at some point in our writing career?

There’s a difference between offering constructive criticism and offering help and advice, and just being an asshole because you can. If someone has the writing skills to be in the casual section, they shouldn’t be told to go back to free because they don’t understand some things about the site’s format and design.

On another note, I also hate when people hijack another person’s interest check by posting their own plot synopsis in it. Like, if you want this plot so much, make your own interest check? Start your own RP? It’s not that hard. Don’t enter someone else’s interest check and start spewing your own advertisements and ideas for how you think their plot should be. Even if the prospective GM is new to the site, that’s just saying that you don’t value their creativity and ideas and that everything should be about you. It’s super disrespectful and it’s undermining the potential GM. And doing it just because they’re new to the site is like, wildly manipulative.

*Disclaimer* None of this happened to me, I’m just a wickedly pissed off observer of some of the shit happening to new players.

Even though you basically just described the best character in LotGH, I do generally agree with this.

I'll be honest, most of the people I play with are kind of old to old as dirt on the Guild and I've never seen anything but people excited when someone gets a post up period. That'd be a turnoff for me too. Most of these RP's that I participate in happily include new players.

This is just a general one that irks me a lot of the time - Those people that bitch and moan about Rpers dropping Rps or quitting without a word and you are sitting there going "Oh like this Rp you dropped without a word? Or this one? Or this one? Or this one where you did say you were dropping it but you said it was because you were too busy and then you joined up three others that same day?"

This complaint applies to 1x1s because of course GM's make the intro post. XD

I hate people shoving introduction posts on me. It comes off very rude.

I do enjoy making introduction posts but when my partner says I've gotta make the first post, it leaves a nasty taste in my mouth. Like, we should talk about whose character is probably the root of the first scene and see whether they need to be led into the scene or if they're already set up. I think who starts an intro depends on the RP's situation. But when I have 3-4 folks making me start an intro, it's going to take a few days for me to even have time to get something up.

Worst part is I sometimes spend a good 1-2 hours making an intro only to have the partner see it and then change their mind and leave. Like...thanks for wasting my time, pal. Fuck you!

Usually I ask who wants to start (usually it ends up being me) but I never outright ask someone to start because it seems rude. I've had on very rare occasions, have had the other partner offer to start and I think that is just so sweet of them. I understand some people feel pressured with intros to either not write too much but still offer enough background so things get off on the right foot but somehow it seems a lot of folks shy away from it.

When I am busy and someone asks me to start, I tell them it'll be a day or two before I can post (which is true when school is the cause) and they're free to post. Then of course a day later, they ask for that intro. Buddy, you've got time, why don't you start instead of asking me?

I don't know...

I'm used to starting, I don't mind doing it but at times it comes off like they're nervous or lazy and I don't want to write with someone who is nervous or lazy. It's the first post, even if you think yours sucks, it's going to get better. But what I hate the most (it's happened a lot) is I'm tasked to make the intro and then a reply never comes. If something's wrong, tell me! I'll fix it. If you see I gave you more/less than you expected, try to match it as best you can but saying nothing and vanishing just makes me grind my teeth when the next person asks me to start us off.

*shakes head* I just wish people were more courteous of each other and I guess more confident and communicative. Introductions should be fun for both people, not a chore or a place for judgement.

@Genkai So in short, if we were to 1x1, I should expect you to tell me to make the intro?

This happened to me a long time ago but I remember this one experience I had with a roleplay. I think it was when I using gaia forums to roleplay, anyway I decided to join this roleplay. The roleplay had two sides to it, I decided to go with the 'bad' side in the roleplay cause I like to try to even things out.

So I put all this effort into my character, creating their powers to make them a viable threat, etc. Then later on there was this weird discussion about certain character powers and basically these two people were bragging about how OP their characters were. I got into the discussion and they basically denounced my character and how their powers would easily beat mine and how they were much better at writing then I was. I had never seen two such elitist fruitcakes in my entire roleplaying career.

Alright so maybe I was more the high-casual level rather than advanced but they essentially attacked me, my character, and my writing for no good reason. Never did get to the point where that particular character would fight with theirs, but that was probably for the best as they probably would have power-played the crap out of that fight.

I'm pretty sure neither of them were the maker either...it was just sad.

@IceHeart Honestly the whole 'WIN TEH GAEM" dynamic of some people is why I stopped screwing around with NRP's. It's one thing if someone is a bit of a jackass and is trying not to be, but it sounds like those two shitsmears weren't bothering to try to reign in their inner douche.

@Genkai Even though in 1x1s it's just between two people, I do agree that both players should at least discuss beforehand how to start, where to begin, who goes first...

Basically, communication is key.

Rather than pushing the work to another partner, if both parties have discussed how the introduction would be like and are on the same page on the ideas, whoever is less busy can go ahead and start off first. Unless you're seriously that incompetent in English, why push all the work to one person, and then complain somewhere else about how that person is slow or whatever? You ain't being "polite" by pretending to take the back seat - it's actually the opposite.

While there are shy people who will need to take some time to muster the courage and be more forward with participation, don't forget that not everyone has so much patience to wait for you to take the first baby step. Writing is just like any other form of arts - even subjects. If you're unwilling to step out of your comfort zone, or if you're not willing to put in the effort, your writing won't get any better. And don't whine about why your writing suck even after so many years and RP attempts. You only have your own self to blame.

People can try to help you, but if you don't even help yourself, nothing will move forward. Nothing will improve.

@HeySeuss
I mostly do NRP for collaborative world building much more than for some 4X type thing.

That being said I have had all sorts of situations where you get players who power game shit. For instance in a space RO there was this one guy who just kept giving himself all the best tech without any real regard for context of plot. He insisted he had that, yet seemed much more occupied with thinking up ridiculously advanced tech than anything else. It actually bothers me when people in NRP try to make societies where "culture" is irrelevant not for some thematic reason but because they just care about gaming things. I've made hive minds with more culture than some human civs in sci-fi NRPs simply due to my lack of enthusiasm regarding creative energy writing about the armaments of various spaceships or making galleries of my favorite sci-fi deviant art pictures.
