A Crash at the Horizon

@Crimmy@Silvan Haven@Lucius Cypher@Azereiah@Guess Who@Ryonara@Abillioncats@Ayazi@Plank Sinatra

“Captain, incoming bogey at 12 O’clock.” The man swiveled around in his chair, hitting a few buttons as he called out to his captain.

“Give me visuals.” A loud, commanding voice echoed through the bridge and immediately the front monitor displayed two women, hurtling through the air at speeds that threatened to outpace the storm and each bolt of lightning it was hurtling towards the beach. “They’ve got moxie,” the commander said, a brazen smile crossing her lips.

"Captain?" The man asked, turning around. When he did he was met with a woman standing decked a form-fitting white dress shirt with a black tie trailing down it. She also wore a black pencil skirt, similar to one a teacher might wear. Her shoulders were emblazoned with chevrons and she looked more confident than she ever had.

“I don’t know what I expected from her.” She said laughing a little, she couldn't contain her smile. Her tousled ivory hair escaping the pilot's hat on her head and trailing down her shoulders. She opened the side doors of the air ship. The entire thing was a massive spectacle, to be sure. But the girls would have to stick the landing on one of the sides, given their trajectory it would be the ship’s right side, their left.

Stella moved to meet the two, adjusting her black tie as she stepped out on the side deck which was usually used for controlled high altitude jumps. Her sunglasses stayed on only through the use of her semblance and her entire outfit flapped in the wind. Her hat was tossed to the sky, perhaps as a signal or perhaps just because of Stella’s flair for the dramatic.

The teacher stared down the two girls in their swift approach. She would have to make sure that the two could survive the landing, regardless of their accuracy. Her grin was uncontainable as she knew that Lauren would enjoy the outfit choice. Of course Gratia would be sure to make snide comments about it until the exercise was over and she was out for the day, but that was just who she was.

Stella finally took the flare in her right hand and ignited it, discarding the lid and holding the flare up with a single confident hand.
“Bring it home, girls.” She whispered under her breath still standing on top of the aircraft, a Nuit in a pilot’s uniform riding a plane, it somehow seemed apropos.

Survival

As a comet of two pilots soared to the skies, Sangue blinked as she watched it scream through the air. She felt the rain blast towards her direction.

From what she could hear, Lauren was heading straight to the ship. From what Sangue saw for a split millisecond, someone else seemed to accompany her.

Staring at her friend's ascension, she remained still, simply observing from the ground.

It looked very cool.

While it was evident that she always looked up to Lauren, Sangue seemed visibly excited to see the Negasi Heavy's explosive launch- if her eyes simply widening in the rain meant anything at all. She eventually squinted before letting her organic hand shield her face by her forehead as she continued observing, hoping that Lauren and her partner's flight would end safely-

On a second thought, Lauren wasn't the one in danger.

So Sangue instead hoped that the airship would be safe...

"COMING IN HA-HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA-HOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOT!"

The girls surfing Hautdesert up into the heavens were within sight of their target, hurtling close enough that their well-trained eyes all spotted the woman guarding their point of entry. Lauren's briefings on airship schematics to Grat hadn't included women; if it were Grat alone, this mission would no doubt be in trouble. But Grat was not alone; women were the specialty of Hautdesert's pilot. There wasn't one alive that Lauren hadn't found a way to hand--

"AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA"

Nigga, who the fuck--

"THIS IS STUPEEEEENDOOOOOOOOOOOUS!"

There was no time to figure it out. It had to be now.

Lauren pulled their makeshift mount out from under their feet, grasping it in two hands and pulling back the grip of what was once a tonfa. The wave motion beam cut out and died before it could annihilate the girls, but the trade-off for that continued molecular security was jarring. The motion of the two (three?) students became uncontrolled and wild, unable to be steered as Lauren had previously. Gratia had been supposed to dismount herself, safely, but there was no time for that now. One of the things Lauren would have to work out for next time.

Instead, she swung the axe down hard with a thunderous scream, burying it deep within the hull of the airship to create a sudden stop to their forward motion. It caused the grip of the girls on each other to become jerky, and were it not for Lauren's Semblance she might have even lost a hold of Gratia's hand. The girl clinging to Grat's leg looked more unfazed - she had buried her face inside the girl's hair, for reasons that became apparent once they all stood. It was one of Grat's teammates - the other girl from Armory.

She'd spent the entire time worrying about her glasses.

Fuck me, man...

Well, hopefully, she was good in a scrap, becau--

"Oh."

Lauren breathed out the word between heavy pants, trying and failing to wipe the exhilarated grin off her face and be serious. She just hoped Grat was savvy enough to let her do the talking.

That sure was a lot of decoration on Stella's uniform. She wondered if she'd ever flown before. Rolling the dice on that could be her best option. She looked like an actress portraying a pilot, not a woman with real experience. If it came up sidways...if it came down to fighting Stella to get onto the ship...

"Hey bitch."

Nailed it.

A Crash at the Horizon

@Crimmy@Silvan Haven@Lucius Cypher @Guess Who@Ryonara@Abillioncats@Ayazi@Plank Sinatra

Stella looked onward at her valiant knight. While she may not have been riding in on a worthy steed, she could, if she played her cards right.

Lauren brought two friends along with her, one easily recognizable as a frazzled but ultimately still put together Gratia Mindaro. The other, whose identity was just as clear was the ever-not present, pile of Goodwill bargain bin clothing herself, Vega Venetia. Stella couldn’t help but smile until Lauren pushed her matted hair back out of her face and grinned at the Mistralian teacher/pilot/runway model.

“Hey bitch.”

Suddenly the other two Mistralians, the airship, wind, surroundings they all vanished. Bells clattered through the air and Lauren and Stella were standing facing one another. Wedding dresses, a roaring audience of beloved fans.

“Wanna learn how to fly an airship?” The stunning female Adonis asked her with charisma to spare.

“I do.” Stella said, a grin as wide as it could go, hair billowing in the wind.

Directing Lauren and the others to the cockpit. Trying to bring herself down from the adrenaline high that she was already feeling, she raised a hand gingerly in the air, looking at her students with a grin. The woman snapped as the three students found themselves alone the cockpit, at once all holograms of crew members vanished, save for Stella herself.

She directed Lauren to the pilot’s chair, navigation controls at the ready. She slyly slipped her pilot’s hat onto Lauren’s head, fingers lingering in the girl's hair and brushing against her neck just long enough to get the point across. She leaned back on the wall just to her left, glancing at Gratia and Vega with a warm, almost motherly smile. “Let’s hope you two bet on the right horse!”

"Hu-uh."

Lauren's noise of curiosity came as she used her Scroll as a mirror for how she looked with a pilot's hat on. It looked alright enough, if a little crooked on her head. That was alright; it looked better on her than a train conductor's disguise, even if this didn't come with an obnoxious whistle that she could blow in people's ears to distract them. What does one do if a teenage girl is an obnoxious asshole and blows a whistle in their ear? They scream and curse at the girl. They demand to see a supervisor. They gleefully crow how they'll "wreck" your "job."

It's usually a while before they check their wallets.

Lauren wasn't as good doing service jobs on an airship as she was on a train. She was much better at the flying part - and pilots didn't get a lot of free time to make easy money off of robbing irritated passengers. It was too bad, because there were way more cute girls on airships than there were on trains. Airships were for girls like Stella. Trains were for Stella's great-great-great-grandma Barbara. Rattling on about the alliance with the Atlesian always made the trains run on fucking time. Longing for the days that a girl on the wait staff wasn't quite so fucking uppity.

"Huh huh."

Lauren grinned wolfishly and leaned over the command console, resting her knees in the seat of the pilot's chair and supporting herself with her arms. Picking up the controls again was like stealing a bike; it all came back.

Beryl Harken had made them a solid target, so Lauren's hands glided along the touchscreen to make the ship glide in turn. It touched down on the sands, closest to the exhausted hydrokinetic Faunus, and Lauren leaned up from the console to dust her hands in satisfaction. She slipped over the side of the chair to walk back along the length of the cockpit, towards the hatch directly behind the entrance. A single pull-up did the job, allowing her to stand directly atop the hull again - though this time after a considerably less stressful arrival - and stare down the length of the beach.

So much for that bonfire, you dumbass marks.

Why did no one think through spending all their efforts on a blaze five minutes before a monsoon? Or a fucking leaf yurt?

Holy fucking shit.

Guess everyone had spent so much time allowing Vacuans to die that nobody had picked up any of their survival tips.

"ATTENTION ALL CANDY ASSES!"

Lauren held up her axe to the darkening skies, her giant berserker grin unfazed by the wind howling through her hair, or the rain whipping against her black tank top.

"THE PILOT IS DEAD; LONG LIVE THE PILOT! EVERYONE PLEASE BOARD THE SHIP IN AN ORDERLY MANNER! NO CUTTING IN LINE, NO PULLING EACH OTHER'S HAIR! CRISS CROSS, APPLESAUCE, SPOONS IN YOUR FUCKIN' BOWLS! COME ON, GANG, Y'ALL LEFT ENOUGH BLACK FOLK TO FEND FOR THEMSELVES IN THE JUNGLE, YOU AIN'T GONNA DO ME LIKE THAT! SANGUE! WHERE'S MY SANGUE?"

Of course, Lauren found her Sangue in short order, and the whole class class - to a student - was in the airship outracing Stella's programmed monsoon. They had survived Survival.

When the simulation ended, it was Lauren Negasi, her new weapon in her hand, who was grinning the widest.

"What would this school be without me?"

As classes reached their end, the bell rang.

Students filed into the hallways as they headed out of their fifth period classes. Some complained about how boring their core classes were, while others simply chattered amongst their friends, occasionally raising their voices in the more occupied areas of the halls.

The students headed off to their sixth period classes.

(Everyone head to Sixth Period! Next classes are Dust Apps and Practice, led by @Crimmy and @Plank Sinatra respectively. Seniors will be having Senior Aura Control, led by @Kaithas.)

The image of Lauren piloting a ship didn’t leave Sangue’s head for a while.

Then again, Lauren herself always seemed to be floating in Sangue’s thoughts, along with Ben and Amy. But all of them were different from each other, and Lauren was no exception. To Sangue, Amy was a careful, but accepting friend. She also happened to be the first friend Sangue meditated with. Ben gave off an air that made her think calmly. Lauren was always… how could she put it…?

Happy.

Perhaps that was the understatement of the century.

Regardless, Sangue felt safe when Lauren was around. It would have sounded odd even to her if she did not know Lauren, but she did.

Her next class period happened to be the only class where none of her team members would be around. With that in mind, Sangue decided that she should be more outgoing. Be a bit more like her excitable team members! She gave a small bow to Lauren as she left the classroom.

She ended up continuing to think about Lauren’s piloting as she walked down the halls.

Hana Dulcet

“S-She looks like the world just crumbled around her.”

“Hey, let’s not bother her. She kinda looks… dead in the inside.”

“The heck happened to that girl?”

A shell of an orange-haired girl walked down the halls, her eyes empty and her body almost flailing at the slightest winds caused by students passing by. This shell was named Hana Dulcet. She was an aspiring Huntress who was 199% done with the world. The remaining 1% existed only because of the dignity she still held.

Dignity my ass... She thought as she wavered her way down the halls. I just got chased by an army of girls and my weird team members busted out some K*men R*der bullcrap...

It was horrifying! The whole situation was horrifying. No, she won’t judge her team members for who they were. Some people were different from others, right? Her pa always told her that. But whatever reason the headmaster had to make them her team members made her want to rip her ponytail off. And the only calm team member- Sarina- was supposedly used to their absurd behavior, so that only helped at the bare minimum!

And she was supposed to be leading them, too!

GuuuuuUUuUUuUUUUUGHHHhhhh…

She then remembered their voices, which was quite obviously different from the masked people that conveniently happened to be around for her.

Wow, the Hottie Rangers must have been in town!

Guess all the racket was them keeping the peace for us?

“NGAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!”

For a split moment, Hana’s hair flared to life before it quickly died down, having almost activated her Semblance. Some of the students around her made a beeline around her, startled by her sudden anger.

Hana was not going to back down. Not yet, at least. She still needed to make it clear that nobody should mess with her and her feelings. The first thing she was going to do was go to her class first and sit like the dignified person she was.

Yun

Yun headed off to her sixth period class, humming to herself as she thought about what to indulge herself with after Dust Apps.

I glanced over at Estelle after having been swept up in all the commotion of Lauren, Vega and Gratia saving us all with an airship. She looked really proud of everyone, she looked at me with the same wide smile even though I didn’t really do anything. But that’s when I saw it.

She was proud, of course. She was also dressed as a pilot, but without the requisite hat.

She directed my eyes to Lorena Negasi, standing there holding her weapon, grinning even wider than Stella and, of course adorned with a pilot’s cap. Immediately my eyes darted back to Stella who was laughing a little looking at me. I looked back at Lauren as the simulation ended and the scenery faded.

No she wasn’t.

I ‘decided to stick around’ waiting for everyone to leave the classroom, the entire time sitting at my desk staring at Stella who was walking around with a skip in her step picking up garbage from her cupcakes she had distributed to the class. As the last few students departed and it was just me and Stella left in the room she threw the wrappers in the garbage facing away from me.

“Stel-“ I started, but before I could even finish she whipped around, that same goofy grin on her face.

“I killed it today!” She said, rushing up to me and embracing me in her arms. “I was so nervous!” She said she was shaking from all the excitement.

“Y-yeah, Stella, everyone knew you’d do well.” I responded, not expecting the openness right from the start. “But that doesn’t excuse you and Lauren!” I said separating her from me and looking at her. She still wore a smile, albeit a guilty one as she scratched the back of her head.

“I got taken up in the moment, I was basically a hostage!” She said laughing, walking away from me.

“Where do you think you’re going?” I called out as she ran to a side room. The skip in her step seemingly amplified even further.

“I’m changing back into my sexy teacher outfit!”

Now, I know Stella to be a bit of a rule bender. I know her to not love the idea of authority what with our father. But damn it Stella you cannot just call it your sexy teacher outfit.

“Come on Stella, don’t you think you’re trying a little hard?” I called out to the changing room. What use did a Survival class have for a changing room anyway?

“Yeah right Bianca!” She shouted back hastily. “She made a nipplecake!”

“Pardon?”

“She made a nipplecake!”

Okay. I did hear you.

“What is that?” Instant regret flowed through my very being.

“Her cupcake was made into a nipple and then she did stuff to it while staring at me.”

Ohmygod.

“Yeah okay that’s- Jesus Stella.” I felt my face flush, just what the hell kind of force of nature was Lauren?

Stella emerged from the changing room looking as if she hadn’t just flown through a simulated monsoon. I was always annoyed she could do that. Just turn on being perfectly well kept. She immediately made her way to me with a brush and before I could protest she was sitting up on her desk brushing my hair.

“Oh you laugh and poke fun…” Stella said, gently running the brush through my hair. “But I didn’t take Lauren on some kind of love cruise, that’s straight out of the Bianca Nuit – Heiress Extraordinaire playbook.” I felt my face re-flush just as it was beginning to return to normal.

“I didn’t invite him! He was just there and he thought I was a murderer!” I protested trying to turn to face her, but the brush prevented me as a sharp pain made its way to my head.

“Yeah I know – what luck, meeting Adonis the super spy on a cruise ship and circumstances force you into the bond girl role of your dreams.” Stella said, lowering her face so that it was beside mine. I didn’t look – I already knew that she had a shit eating grin on her lips.

“I don’t even think we’ll get to know each other. I don’t think we have any classes together.” I said somewhat sorely. Stella just giggled and continued to brush my hair.

“Yeah… I’m sure you’ll see each other plenty Bianca.” She said sweetly, “there – all done!” She put the brush on the table and hopped off. “Okay you be good now! I’ve got to go run some errands!” She said taking off with a fair amount speed.

“Hey Stella! We’re not done talking about your whole hot for teacher phase! Do you know something about Jericho?!” I shouted out but before I could finish she was waving and altogether, gone.

I took a deep breath. Stella is totally falling head over heels for that girl, it’s so weird. How are we even related?

I took a second before leaving the classroom to use the changing room Stella had just used. I saw an array of outfits she had prepared, presumably for future classes.

“Jeez Stella at this point you might as well be asking her out on a date in front of the whole class.” I said to myself. I quickly threw on my Practice outfit, an athletic crop top, some leggings and a pair of runners. But I was probably going to ask Gratia to help me practice whatever it was I did in Grimm Studies. I had tapped into… Something, I just don’t know what.

I left Survival and made my way to practice, I was looking forward to having another class with Gratia – she was always a good training partner because she would never go easy on you. Sangue was in that class too and she seemed pretty nice.

I made a mental note to check in with Luke and Skye later on as we hadn't spoken much today.

Sender: Lil Miss Perfect
Recipient(s): Skye Blue Skye True, Mid-Intensity Human
Body: Hey kids! Gonna pick up some dinner for everyone tonight so we can meet up after classes <3
Thank me later,

Lots of love,
Bianca Nuit

P.S. Any requests????

After sending out the text I took a spot by myself in the classroom, there was still some time before classes started so it seemed like I was one of the first to get there. Instinctively I started to warm up for when class would start.

Iona Murasaki

A girl with purple hair walked quickly through the halls of Beacon.

If one was close enough, they could hear the girl mumbling to herself. "I still don't understand why I couldn't just stay in Mistral..." She turned a corner. "I was set. Powered right on through Sanctum, and was doing well in Haven. At least...I think I was." She turned another corner, a little more earnestly than she had the last. "And then suddenly they were just like nope. And there I was, shipping off to Vale." She turned yet another corner, and if an onlooker were observing they would now be realizing that she was probably lost. She was just trying to hide it, and not really succeeding.

Beacon did look nice though, she had to admit. Although she was rushing through the halls she at least didn't have her eyes closed so she could see what was what. She turned another corner and quickened her pace slightly, taking a quick glance down at her map. "Okay, I think this is the way," she said, with a little less grudge in her voice. As she finally set herself on the right course to her class she tried to think positively. "I guess I just need to make the best of it. Beacon has a good reputation and it seems like a nice place. And I've proven myself once, so I can do it again. And I get to start with 'Practice', which seems like it'll be easy enough. I just have to get over the hurdle of..."

She stopped in her tracks as she entered what she thought was her class and looked around the room to a sprinkling of unfamiliar faces.

"...not knowing anyone."

@Ookawa @Plank Sinatra @NarayanK

Oh, just when he needed it, someone appeared. Tanner supposed the gods were smiling on him that day, despite his murder of their “chosen servants.” If her seeming rudeness bothered him--or if he even noticed it--it didn’t show.

“Nah, I’m no teacher. I’m faculty… no, staff. That’s the one. I normally catch whatever Professor Port needs for Grimm studies, do other odd jobs, that kinda thing,” he responded, lazily extending a hand in offer to shake Blaire’s. “I’m Thomas Tanner. Most people just call me Tanner, but eh. Doesn’t matter much to me. But I can guide ya, wherever you’re headed to.”

He laughed, his unoccupied hand going behind his head to scratch it as he grinned. “That being said, without your name or class schedule I can’t help you that much. Who are you, and where are ya bound?”

"Blaire Dawn. Apparently I am headed for this... 'Practice' class."

Tanner nodded, as if given new understanding, letting go of her hand and holding up his index finger. “Aha! Alright, well, I’ll take you to it, you’re pretty much headed the wrong--”

"I guess I just need to make the best of it. Beacon has a good reputation and it seems like a nice place. And I've proven myself once, so I can do it again. And I get to start with 'Practice', which seems like it'll be easy enough. I just have to get over the hurdle of..."

The Huntsman pivoted on the balls of his feet, his mouth freezing open, continuing to face a young Faunus woman that walked past them, muttering to herself as though they didn’t exist, trying to find a break in her internal-monologue-gone-external to mention that it wasn’t an indoor class--

He sighed, taking a deep breath as she rounded the corner. “Come along, Miss Blaire, if you would. Let’s retrieve her, then I’ll take you both to class.”

The pair caught up to her, right as she walked into Band Practice. Thomas stuck his head in after her.

“Psst.”

Iona wheeled around on her feet, brought out of her monologue by a beckoning noise behind her. A man's head was peeking in the door at her. "Oh hello, did I do something wrong already?" she asked.

“Wrong Practice. I'll take you to the inexplicable one.”

"Oh, ok.”

Both students in tow, Tanner's boots tromped on through the school, out the back door and toward the Practice field. He had nothing better to do, in truth.

Not a moment too soon, either.

***

Rowan was not having the best teaching day, though otherwise it was shaping up to be pretty good. Little overcast, but warm enough, didn't seem to be threatening rain anytime soon. Good weather for Practice, which of course was not the class she was teaching today. Still, probably fortunate for Jericho’s first day of actually being faculty of a sort. Maneuvers in the rain were generally not a good spot to start things.

No, Rowan's issue mostly centered on her own lesson plan. Ordinarily she enjoyed teaching Aura Control--it was a small class of only seniors, most of whom knew what they were doing and were eager to learn. As eager as Beacon students about to graduate got, anyway. But then there were days like today. Days where she had to try to codify her understanding of Aura into words and theory rather than feelings and practice.

She'd give everyone a few more minutes to get here. Jericho was nowhere to be found, yet, anyway, and there had been a lot of turnover over the weekend.

At least Tanner had been kind enough to gather up the two never-been-to-a-Beacon-class-before students for her. As the scruffy man walked away, Blaire and Iona were greeted by an auburn-haired, fit Atlesian woman walking toward them with something of a military bearing, tapping on the Scroll on her wrist cuff to dismiss it.

“Iona Murasaki, Blaire Dawn, allow me to be the first faculty member to welcome you to Beacon. I'm Professor Iderson, your Practice teacher. I regret that I don't have time to conduct orientation or go over the class syllabus with you right now, but if you need anything afterward feel free to ask me. In the meantime--”

The ex-soldier raised her voice, turning back to the class at large. “As you arrive on the field, please separate yourselves into seniors and freshmen. I'll be teaching Aura Control today for the seniors, Jericho Piper will be conducting Practice. You have a few minutes, talk amongst yourselves if you're inclined.”

Bianca Nuit: The Girl that Beat Fate

@Kaithas@Plank Sinatra@Krayzikk

You might be wondering, “Who’s that Faunus with the wings, the crop tops, and that ass?”

Yup, you guessed it. That’s me, Bianca Nuit.

You might be wondering how I got 30 feet in the air celebrating my victory over fate.

Well come along, let me show you.

See, there I was. Sitting there, doing some stretches. It had been a while since I was in active duty and today was kind of like my first real day back in the proving grounds of Beacon Academy. So let’s check the scoreboard, shall we?

4th period saw me take on a Riesen-class Grimm with the help of an entire class of my peers. But more notably, Benjamin Lloyd who, to put it mildly, could play a young Brennan Griese if they ever decided to do a biopic on him. That’s the level of fit we’re dealing with. He pretty much confirmed in front of the entire class that what Bastille did during those last missions? Not a fluke.

And he couldn’t have done it without me.

5th period risk causing a moral panic that could take Vale by storm, and saw me face a monsoon and a sea full of Grimm. While my classmates secured a fast exit from a sinking ship, I was able to fend off a flock of Grimm from most of the non-fliers.

…To be honest, once we got to the beach I kind of zoned out gathering shells at the beach, but it started productive!

Unfortunately I couldn’t take the seashells with me… As they weren’t real.

Look, let’s just keep going ignore that!

And now here I was in 6th period. The end to a wholly productive day. I was prepared to come into practice, work out a little, get a sexy amount of post-workout sweat without ruining my hair, and then go make some dinner for my team. I was taking the world by storm. But the world noticed. And in the moment my supposed instructor came out, I knew something was off.

“As you arrive on the field, please separate yourselves into seniors and freshmen. I'll be teaching Aura Control today for the seniors, Jericho Piper will be conducting Practice. You have a few minutes, talk amongst yourselves if you're inclined.”

Well, as you can now see, rather than “talk amongst yourselves if you’re inclined” I shot up like a bottle rocket charged only by romantic victory.

There I was, proudly, heroically even, above my classmates when my eyes darted across the field to find him. While I couldn’t quite yet (he was probably being cute lifting some weights somewhere, I could feel it) I gracefully made my descent back to the field and landed with a small curtsy.

The other students would find their hero biding her time, stretching but with an ever-watchful eye, I didn’t need to warm up – my heart was already beating a mile a minute.

PE went by pretty much the way it started; quick and chaotic.

There wasn’t a ton to say on the subject, no one really knew the rules so it was pretty much everyone’s best attempt. It was fun, though. Coach called it ten minutes before the end so everyone could hand their colors back in and change, if they’d changed into exercise clothes.

Ben had no fuckin’ idea what Trad was gonna do. Poor guy.

He’d lucked out, though. For the most part his uniform had dried back off during the period. He was way too hot to put the blazer back on right now, but he draped it over one shoulder and picked up Joyous Guard after he exchanged a few pleasantries with his team. Most of ‘em he knew, but he made sure to catch the contact details of the new guys. Blaine seemed pretty cool, especially, and it seemed like his team was all new. Luke and Amy were headed with him to the next period; Dust Apps. That… Actually was one he hadn’t taken before. Man, between starting up late and the week Trad was gone everything had been fucky.

Was student and teacher turnover always this high? What the fuck, Oz?

Still, that meant something important had to happen. The staking out of the unassigned assigned seats. Everyone except Sangue was there, Luke was there, that meant at least three seats right there. Probably more, if any of Luke’s team was in there. Had to get there quick to stake out a set of seats like that. So he clapped Luke and Amy both on the back, told ‘em to keep up, and took off at a light jog for lecture hall I707. Seeing as they were coming from the gym, that was a bit of a haul.

”Hey, Luke, you know anything about Cirsium?” He queried a little over halfway through the trip, pivoting to walk backwards for a second so he could see the Shiroyaman. Better chance that Luke’d know something about her than him. ”She was in the Vytal Festival a few years back, right? Met her yet?”

“And hey,”
He continued, pivoting back around as he stepped into the hall. The rows near the back were mostly clear, so they’d do just fine. This group, he knew better than to try and put them up front. He glanced around, a little exaggeratedly, and held his hand palm-down at about chin height. ” Anyone seen my Lauren? You know, Negasi?”

“About this high, bit of a pain in the ass? Lovable anyway?”

Survival

Survival class ended without much trouble. Instead of signaling for the ship or waiting out the storm, a few of the students elected to just take it by force. From an outsider perspective Yue would have had serious issues with it, but the more she thought about it, the more she begrudgingly accepted that she’d likely have done something similar if it was just herself and her team. She could afford to create shealter thanks to having so many others to do the heavy lifting, but in her own she likely would’ve robbed and stole from others too. Perhaps not the sort of thing a Hunter should do, but they weren’t heroes. They needed to do what they could to survive.

Next class was Dust App. Yue hopes to restock her supplies there as well as test out some new dust. She usually carried the basics but now she needed to diversify her dust. Since her weapon didn’t have as many mechanical applications as others, and her semblance was fairly straightforward, she needed to make up in dust usage. New and unexpected ways to utilize dust that will make others really question what can and can’t be done.

After changing to a new uniform Yue went into Dust Apps and immediately went to restock her supplies. Most people used raw crystals for the most impact, or at least highly concentrated dust to fill bullets and such, but Yue could get as much power with must less using her paper tags. A Guan Family secret, hardening back to an older era where dust infused clothing was still a thing. By inscribing dust into unique fiber sheets and then applying a bit of laminate, Yue could create compact and powerful tags as strong as a large cache of Dust without taking as much space. Only issue was their short shelf life; they’ll barely last a day before the juice is out and they become worthless fancy paper.

Yue made the usual fire, ice, and lightning, but also started the process of making some with an earth, light, and wind. She wanted to test a few ideas out before she starts making them in bulk.

Jericho was sure that Professor Iderson wouldn't mind the modifications he'd done to the training drones.

In the days of old, before Jer's transfer, the Beacon shooting range had been a decidedly staid affair. It wasn't tall, but it was wide, encompassing most of the width at the end of the field between it and the obstacle course. Apparently no one had ever realized that the ideal range for long-range engagements wasn't the range at all, but rather, the space atop the fourth and fifth upper bars towards the end of the obstacle course. That was more accurate when you pictured what a sniper's nest was. Of course, the drone patterns in Beacon lacked imagination, too, as Jer had learned with a mounting pout during the night he had spent - and slept - out in his future domain.

So, the minute that the senior faculty had left him alone with administrator access to the range, he had called Speer and shared those same privileges with him.

Which...

Was it morally lacking and diplomatically risky to share the hyper-sensitive codes for a military installation from another kingdom, in the heart of that kingdom's greatest school, with an anti-establishment CCT shitposter? Well...maybe.

...Yeah.

But as long as nobody ended up shot to death on his first day, he was sure that Rowan and Ozpin would appreciate the pragmatism.

With the help of his combat data, Speer's programming savvy, and about an hour and a half of midnight troubleshooting, the drones on the firing range had gone from the lazy patterns used at every mom and pop gun range from here to Mantle - side to side, front to back - to targets that possessed a full range of motion and were even capable of outfoxing him on rare occasions. He'd left PE twenty minutes early, under the guise of a TA's exemption that said that he needed to prepare for his first day as lessons.

In reality, he'd just changed as soon as he got here and then started sniping for fun. He had his noise cancelling earbuds in and a playlist curated at random by one of his friends - it was Tuesday, meaning today was Shiloh. This was the first track in twenty minutes that wasn't some suggestive Panic! At the Disco deep cut, God help him - cycling through as he unwound, firing at the drones that his Scroll's administrator privileges hired. Speer's idea to actually feed them his personal combat data was a stroke of genius - and Beacon's tech wasn't too shabby, either, as the marriage of Atlesian ingenuity with the equipment available to him as a Practice instructor had actually resulted in two potshots in fifteen minutes.

It was comfy.

So comfy, in fact, that he had long been ignoring the urgent beeping of his Scroll, informing him that his pre-class warm up had actually crossed over into 'class time' territory, and by now a minute-and-three-quarters had gone by since he was supposed to report inside for the opening of class.

Ah, hell...

Most of it was probably Rowan's spiel about him anyway. They wouldn't be reporting to the field, would they?

...

Was he going inside or were they meeting him out in the field?

Rowan had said they did most of their work out in the field.

Awwww hell I'm gonna get caught.

He picked up his Scroll hurriedly, the ropes between the up-and-over bars shaking precariously as his movements became more rushed. His fingers danced along the touchscreen quickly, deactivating all combat protocols and returning the drones inside the range with minimal fuss. He had no idea how fast they would move, even with the improvements he had asked Speer for - software only went so far in the face of sheer hardware limitations. He was going to cut it close.

Act natural!

As his fellow students began to file outside, they were met with the sight of their erstwhile TA dropping down from the up-and-over bar at the end of the obstacle course. He was dressed comfortably for training, all in black, with a sheer tank top that didn't put any pressure on his bandaged left arm, a pair of compression pants, and minimalist shoes. His long hair was done back in a wolf's tail to avoid distractions.

Distractions like the garish Atlesian sniper rifle he hadn't gotten a chance to stash away.

He could see a girl near the front of the horde of students touch down, wings stretched out luxuriously and then furling as she began her stretches. She looked expectant. Rowan must have already told the class who was handling their Practice lectures from here on out.

I should have been a shitposter.

A neckbeard would have gone a long way to disguise how cute he was.

Jer didn't smile, but he looked faintly - and sheepishly - amused at the approaching student body, and he tossed the sniper rifle over his shoulder and up onto the ropes where he'd made his sniper's nest, as though he were trying to discreetly toss away a piece of garbage.

Say hi. Say hi to your students. Just like Speer coached you. H and I.

"I know we're all coming back from PE or Survival. I'll give you guys one minute to catch your breath. Then we start."

Ah, shit.

Dust Applications - Lecture Hall I707

Way back when I was still a wee, naive lass, I had the daft idea that adulthood meant being a responsible member of society who wouldn't trouble their fellow humans, and that by passing that arbitrary border between youth and majority, we'd immediately embody all those virtues that our parents and teachers and the all-knowing television were always trying to instill in us. Actual experience with adults chapped those beliefs right out of my head really quickly, because while everybody extols what's supposedly proper, that's really just another façade that society upholds to keep its wheels squeaky and greased properly, you now? Becoming an adult just means others (like the brats who consider you as a figure of authority) think your opinions can be take seriously instead of being mercilessly dismissed by a superficial assumption that just because you're still a little bit too much of a youth, all your beliefs are entirely lacking rather than at worst flawed due to a lack of experience.

Just because someone might have a smidge less know-how or because they look like they're on the wrong side of twenty and thus still just some "fresh-faced" quine, there's no need to consider their opinions as equally valid, right? It's fine to just mince with the folks who you think are serious and intelligent and older (and thus 'wiser'). That's definitely not a bloody load of superficial crock backed by some beady-eyed buggers with no regard for anything beyond themselves.

Well, that's society for you.

A complex machine that manages to keep working mostly smoothly despite the fragility of its situation. If that horde (Army? Pack? Murder?) of monsters looming outside our walls decides one day that they're a little bit famished and want a nip out of humanity, then we're buggered all the way down to Hadestown, you know? If they all got the bright idea to just group up and pounce for the biggest feast in all of Remnant's history, then we'd be sliced apart like my salami at the local deli, and eaten just as fast! The amount of heart they'd need to put into that would be gold star class if I was their teacher, but it's still something they could pull off, and if it happens ... well I dinnieken what exactly might occur, but I'm a bit feart for the result of all us cogs falling out of position.

Luckily, not everybody's as feart for stuff like that happening, because we're really good at lying to ourselves. Just pretend that there's no piece o' nasty bizzo behind the cameras whenever the news tells us that everything's okay, that we've always been at war with Eastasia, that we're all virtuous little contributors to this great society of ours no matter who we really are! Inside, we all know that's not really true. We're not all best mates, that's just not possible when everybody's got different points of view. After all, it's an unfortunate fact of life that people won't care as much for you if you're part of the 'other', a member of a group that isn't theirs. Every person in every level of society works like that, and I'm honestly no exception. Humans are selfish creatures; if you or your actions don't affect us, then you're just somebody else's problem then.

And if the poor sod's been labelled somebody else's problem, then no skin off your back if they have to pick up the pieces of what was supposed to be your responsibility, one that you couldn't handle because of some dunderheaded thoughts, right?

When you're just some brat, you've got your parents and teachers breathing over your shoulder to get all the work you're supposed to do done. I guess once those brats slip into the skin of an adult, there's nobody else motivating them to actually be responsible except for a paycheck that'll stay the same even if they dingy their job. It's mince. We're creatures of self-interest, it's true, but it's just bloody vapid to think that we're all islands who won't affect one another. And if you're a figure of authority, that's not something you should be promoting if you want the brats to survive the harshness of society, you know?

Society forces us to conform to the roles we've been given. As imperfect as we are as cogs, we need to keep turning to sustain the lie we've built over all these generations. Call it disgusting and distasteful if you want, but that's what life's thrown at us. The alternative to this make-believe game of charades is just worse.

And yet it doesn't stop some selfish tubes from skivving.

Handling internship applications is something that's usually the purview of school administration than teaching staff like me, you know? But because all those buggers are on paid leave, they decided they could just leave the applications to later. All the brats won't mind, right? It's not like it'll matter that much in the long run, right?

Maybe.

Maybe not.

I don't know if a lot of these brats can get too much help with their lives by taking an internship with some active Hunters. Maybe it might give a wee boost to their careers, help them gain the connections they'll need to survive the mingin world outside the Academies. Or maybe the apps were just sent in on a lark by some walloper who wants to waste admin's time. I don't know.

But that doesn't mean that they can just avoid doing their job.

A job I decided, like some idjit, to pick up despite not having any need to.

Not because I care about these brats or anything, but if they went to the effort of actually putting in even one internship app, then I should at least consider their hard work, right? Adults are supposed to be role models and supporting the canniest of our youth, and if those buggers don't want to do it, then it's up to me, being their teacher, to do it instead. I'm just contractually obligated to make sure they all get the best education here so they don't die when they're a fully-fledged Hunter, so even if my 'help' doesn't shape out at all, at least I'm here to make sure they're less likely to get splattered into panbread, you know?

It just looks better on my employee evaluation if I help out here, yeah.

What benefits they get don't matter to me at all!

I nod to myself as I scan over an application for the International Center for the Extermination of Creatures Antagonistic to Mankind. A place like that, word-salad name aside, is definitely a good place for some rookie brat to strut their stuff at. As long as they're not too cocky, but I should've taught them better than that, right? I write my approval and add a few comments (just so they look a bit better to their managers on site, okay?), and the application's sent off through Beacon's servers to their final home.

The last of them too.

I swivel around in my chair to look at the clock. I told myself I'd be done half an hour before class started so I could grab a cuppa, but it looks like I've really buggered my chances today. Not that I'm sad about that or anything - this was a job I had to do, you know? Still, with the first Dust Apps class of the semester about to start, I guess I'll have to get that powerpoint set up.

Maybe this time I'll have more students. And they'll pay attention instead of bludging.

It'd be nice to help some brats who actually care.

As the students filed into Lecture Hall I707, they would notice a youthful-looking woman wearing a black tie, sweater and pencil dress standing underneath the projector screen, right in front of the lectern. Although she appeared to be their age (or even younger), she did not seem intent on joining them in their seats, instead tapping away at a tablet in her hands with a face that appeared to be deep in thought.

Some would float the possibility of her being one of the class' teaching assistants, but in that case, where was the lecturer?

Their answer would be provided with the ringing of the bell, upon which the woman placed her tablet down, brushing back a few loose strands of violet hair as she stepped out from behind the lectern to survey the room with a purple gaze.

"My name is Teàrlag Cirsium, your Dust Applications teacher for this semester," she said, a scent of ozone filling the air as she snapped her fingers, producing a blaze of orange flames that burst upwards in a stream from her hand. "But before we start ..."

The flames froze, crystallising mid-air before shattering into minuscule particles that fell all around her.

" ... I'd like to say that absolutely none of you are allowed to fail this course."

Rugby, or whatever that game was, was pretty fun. After the first few plays it seemed like the class was just sorta doing whatever, which suited Selena just fine. It also gave her a good idea of what the other students were capable of, both physically and with their semblances. Selena didn't really use her semblance at all during the game since she mostly relied on just being in the air and dodging other players once she figured out what they could do. That and just resting on the bench; she was still recovering from Blaine's tackle. Once class was over Selena changed back to her uniform and went to her next class: Practice. Selena didn't really have much use for Dust since her weapon was just a basic glaive. She thought about maybe upgrading the shaft to become a rifle or maybe and something to the blade, but Selena liked how Silver Tongue was. Maybe she'll get a side arm or something.

As Selena walked to the next class she saw her teacher. Or someone she thought was her teacher. Some ragged looking fellow with a sniper rifle. She waved at him. "Hiya teach. What's today's lesson? We going to be running through sniper fire or something?" Selena said as she looked at the rifle on his shoulder. It reminded Selena of how her sister taught her how to use her semblance, by shooting at her from across the room. After Selena learned how to channel her aura, she learned how to dodge bullets before she learned how to use her Ghosting powers. Only when she had to dodge shots from being across an open field did she figure out her semblance.

"Wait, really?"

Wow, wait a minute...

We breezed through the halls at a light jog, having donned most of our uniforms after the chaotic learning experience of P.E. The results of our game aside, I felt like I'd grown a little more experienced in a live situation that I had no control over, so hopefully that was going to pay dividends in the long run. I'd barked out orders as they came to me, and when push came to shove, by the end of it I had shouldered the burden of vice-commanding as best I could.

But now I needed to turn my attention towards the next class, the next teacher, and the next skill I wanted to develop. I wasn't expecting leadership to come out of Physical Education in any respect, Dust Apps was as straightforward as you could get. Professor Cirsium would be there with Dust and we'd be there to learn dust.

...Professor Cirsium.

The lilac twintails, the slight build, the giant axe. I rolled the images over in my mind, trying to remember each year I'd plopped down in front of the TV, enraptured, as my Mother, Father, and one lucky sister (usually Dawn) crowded the couch. The year that immediately came to mind within these idyllic memories...

TSUN VS. BANK.

The Festival that hosted April's favorite match of all time.

"Oh man, you're right! I didn't realize at all!"

How embarrassing, that was my favorite year, too!

Damn! Just when I had started to trust my brain!

"Anyway, yeah, I've met her before. Family Day," I intoned as we turned the corner before skidding to a stop in front of the lecture hall—I707. "She's nice enough. Serious about her class, but nice. She talked me through what I needed to do to be ready when I signed up. I guess it came naturally since she's also a student counselor."

I reached for the door—

"Oh, but one thing first."

I spoke to them in a voice as serious as the grave, making sure I looked Ben in the eye.

"She's older than you think she is."

I opened the door.

As we, and the other students who had spotted the class's opening filed in and found our seats, my phone buzzed as I was retrieving my spiral— a text from Bianca.

>Hey kids! Gonna pick up some dinner for everyone tonight so we can meet up after classes <3
>Thank me later,

>Lots of love,
>Bianca Nuit

>P.S. Any requests????

Two sendoffs and a Post-Script.

Bianca...

We're just texting, you know?

Allowing myself a smirk, I quickly thumbed out a response as the bell sounded and a suited up Sensei strolled into the center of the front, nose scrunched up and stuck in a tablet. I had to admit, between my knowing her true age and her dressing the part of a professional lecturer, with the black tie and purple sweater and dress rather than a rabbit-eared hoodie, it was a lot easier for me to buy her as a member of faculty— even if she still looked as youthful as I did.

>Can't really think of any
>surprise me

I would regret that.

"My name is Teàrlag Cirsium, your Dust Applications teacher for this semester," she said, "But before we start ..."

But I wouldn't regret this class.

I immediately snapped to attention as she snapped her fingers—

And quite plainly saw magic before my eyes.

It started with ozone. The smell of thunder filled the hall, prompting me to almost wince and tighten my jaw. I had become uncomfortably familiar with the odor after my last outing on a mission, and found myself eternally thankful for my aura and semblance that no physiological damage had been permanent, somehow—

My tight jaw then slacked again as he smell gave way to sound, light, and heat. From Professor Cirsium's raised palm burst a gout of orange flame, streaming upwards in a torrent that threatened to lick the tiles of any ceiling that wasn't so high as I707's.

Threatened, but wouldn't have.

All just as quickly, the tower of roaring flame froze.

For the briefest moment, we silently sat in awe of the sculpture, a crystalline obelisk of flowing whites and blues— and then it shattered. Powderized. Completely disintegrated, at only the whim of Cirsium.

The young-looking woman was framed in shining rain of diamond, snowfall of her own creation, as she turned her violet eyes back onto us.

" ... I'd like to say that absolutely none of you are allowed to fail this course."

Woah.

That was the coolest thing I'd ever seen a teacher do in my life. An academic teacher, too, Mom didn't really count, but even with her inclusion, the sheer mastery of the elements that had been granted by Teàrlag Cirsium's application of Dust—

I wanted that.

I wanted to be that.

Whatever it took, that kind of skill with something so ubiquitous in the Hunter's world as Dust was something I had to pursue. It could be the greatest equalizer of all for me, given my rushed application and eternal game of catch-up.

My mind was set. I am your humble white belt, O wise and mature Sensei. I am the lump of clay ready to be molded, the empty cup ready to be filled with knowledge.

The first words in my notebook for Dust Apps were as follows, hastily scratched out in the most energetic lines a pencil of mine had ever put to paper.

毎日勉強していなさい!!

The captain of my dream boat, Jericho Piper, dismounted the ropes in a fashion that told everyone: ‘look how sweaty I am but in a hot way.’ He threw a sniper rifle over his shoulders and turned to his students, us.

Me.

"I know we're all coming back from PE or Survival. I'll give you guys one minute to catch your breath. Then we start."

Catch my breath Jericho? When you’re wearing that top?

Please.

But I did, I stopped stretching, found my own place and tried to make my resilience in staring at our instructor casual. Like it was hardly a thing that I refused to stop looking at that demigod of a man. Or like I wasn’t obsessed with how his hair could look so good so long in so many ways. Or his bandaged arm,

he’s a wounded man, I could help fix him up oh my godddddddd.

I need to ask Stella for her sexy nurse costume later.

But before I could think one more thought that could result in someone having to up the rating of my eventual docu-drama series on HBO I received a text from one of my darlings ~

>Can't really think of any
>surprise me

Luke!! Other than my scroll telling me who sent the message how will people know who you are without a cute little calling card afterwards??

Surprise him though, huh?

I guess he wants a little of everything!

I made a mental note (one of many, obviously) to place some orders towards the end of class so I could just get everything picked up afterwards and enjoy a nice dinner with my friends.

Wow, it has been such a short time but… I’ve really come a long way.

Jer glanced in my direction for what amounted to about fifteen seconds. Give or take, sometimes when he looks at me my heart beats fast enough to accelerate my perception of time, frankly. But I’m pretty sure it was my general direction for fifteen seconds.

God I hope he likes crop tops.

Practice
Primary Objectives: Acquire Education, Form Friendly Bonds with Fellow Students
Secondary Objective: Find Pants

@Norschtalen@Driving Park

There was a valiant struggle.

Blood was shed, tears were shed, clothes were shed, and through it all was the constant refrain of violence and passionate youth. A battle between two colors, red and blue, parsing the notes of a primal song; part humanity and part of the wild, bodies clashed and the ball flew. Magnificent, beautiful, disturbing: all these words would well describe the fray, but Blaine would settle on: expensive.

At the end of the period, Blaine stood in a tattered coat, shredded pants, buttons from his assorted clothes littered the floor of the gym, and his shoes were entirely covered in scuff marks and the damage of being used repeatedly as launch pads. For now, he would have to remove his jacket and tie it about his waist if he was to preserve a sense of decency. As he understood it, showing too much of one's thighs was inappropriate, and he still had first impressions to make. Impressions aside, he couldn’t afford to keep doing this, much less considering the rather small remains of his scholarship money. There simply wasn’t room in his budget for more clothing. If only the school gave out some kind of... exercise clothes. Like a gym uniform. He should look into that.

Still, it was worth it. One uniform was a small price to pay for the beginnings of bonds with his fellow Hunters and Huntresses-in-training, and from the look of things, there were a few people who seemed interesting to Blaine. Of particular note were the vibrant faunus girl, the metal-armed boy with his poor attitude, and the leader, Ben, to whom Blaine had explained that he had no tablet, but that the colossal faunus could be found in his room, and if not present would respond shortly to written notices.

...There was also the attractive man who had changed into a woman at the beginning of the match, but it was best to keep those ideas to himself, at least for now. So far, it seemed as though he had made a good first impression, so it was with a parting of teeth meant to approximate a smile and a twinkle in his amazingly intense eyes that he strode towards Practice.

As he walked, Blaine kept his eyes forward, face composed with a polite disinterest, and back ramrod straight. As long as he acted casual, surely no one would notice his largely destroyed uniform. He had seen stranger fashion statements already. Besides, he had business to attend to. He had already given Orrin the charm he had made for him, and from what he had seen on the class registry, the other members of Team Obelisk would be in Practice, providing the opportunity he needed. Most excellent.

Cheerful in his heart of hearts, throat humming ever so slightly with the growling music he remembered from the old days, the young faunus arrived at the obstacle course where he soon spotted Selena and Iona. Reaching into the pocket of his ravaged jacket, the faunus walked behind them, his practiced footfalls unintentionally quiet. With a guttural cough, Blaine cleared his throat, covering his mouth with one hand and clutching towards the charms he had made with the other. He bore his teeth, trying to smile and not really managing to reach his eyes. That was something he still had to practice. “Pardon me, teammates Selena Cecilia and Iona Murasaki. Teammate Selena, I am aware we have seen one another, but missed the chance to introduce ourselves. Teammate Iona, it is a pleasure to finally meet you. I am Blaine Olbrecht, fellow member of Team Obelisk. As our instructor has stated, we have one minute to ‘catch our breath,’ I have already expended 23 seconds, and I need roughly 20 more to properly give each of you a gift and exchange proper... cultural… um.”

As he spoke, Blaine’s teeth ceased to show, his expression becoming more and more intense as his face paled. The faunus rooted through his tattered jacket’s breast pocket, the front pockets of his destroyed pants, his back pockets. ...The charms weren’t there. He had placed them in the morning, but the charms weren’t there. The words died in his throat, his breath wheezing out like a dying accordion.

All of a sudden, it was very hot outside to one Blaine Olbrecht, Hunter-in-training.
