Current I think watching fight scenes can help in general terms with writing combat, since it can give you an idea of flow and choreography.

At least if you're writing something you know, with knights.

I mean, depends on what you're writing, and the tone and theme of what you're writing. Trained armored knights were legitimately monstrous on the battlefield, so looking up how they fought helps.

As much as there's a lot of reasons twitter sucks, I genuinely don't want to see it die for the sake of all the artists who now rely on it. Hoping the shithead stops trying to directly administrate.

RETCON ENGAGED
Sorry to hear about the departures. But, we have to keep moving. I'll just quietly retcon the characters out, it's the least messy way to do things.

For now, we'll be coming up on the camp attack pretty soon!
Ah, she... she should have asked more questions. She'd been so caught up on the ambush and ensuring it wouldn't be followed by another that she hadn't even thought about pressing her interrogation. Now she simply felt foolish... and the Knight-Captain of the Iron Rose Knights wasn't supposed to be acting in a manner that could be considered foolish. That wasn't how things should be. With her performance tonight already-no.

Fanilly had to keep pushing on. If she was to be the Captain, then she had to do everything she could. Next time she would remember to question a prisoner far more thoroughly. For right now, at least one of her knights had recalled to do the same and had taken over.

There was another matter to attend to all the same.

Fanilly's fists tightened slightly.

"We are the Iron Rose Knights," she said, after a few moments. "No matter their crimes, these bandits have surrendered and been divested of their arms. Their fate is now in the hands of the law, and that is what will judge them. We do not slay defenseless, surrendered prisoners."

The young girl was surprised, for a moment, at how sharply she had spoken. But this was something she felt rather strongly. The Iron Rose Knights were an order founded by a saint, were they not? They were an order founded on both Justice and Mercy, were they not? Certainly, these bandits were likely to die. That much was true. But they had surrendered, laid down their arms. They were defenseless with their hands and feet bound. Their fate was now left to be judged by the law, not to be slain in this forest after their surrender. No matter their crimes.

"This is no great distance from Aimlenn, and a pair of footmen can easily handle the job of watching over them if they must," she responded. On this issue, she would not budge. "We stand for justice and mercy, and so the prisoners that have surrendered will live to face the law."

She tried not to get angry. At least, not visibly. But how could someone suggest killing surrendered prisoners and then call themselves an Iron Rose Knight? That flew in the face of every single tale she'd heard, of even her research into the history of the order. A formal execution as judged by the law... if the Iron Rose Knights had to carry out such a thing, then they would. But killing those who have surrendered on a battlefield, just because it would take effort to have some of the footmen watch over them to ensure they don't attempt escape?

It was something she would never, could never, allow.

Fanilly turned away, her cape fluttering behind her as she did.

The bandit being interrogated was, by this point, trembling in terror.

"F-f-first the little girl now th-this... ahh damn it my day has just gotten worse and worse!" he moaned, "Kaleb spilled my soup 'n now... er..."

He trailed off after a few moments.

"... Camp has sentries posted 'round it..." he said, finally, averting his eyes. It was clear he at least felt some shame in divulging the answers, though not enough to stop himself from speaking, "Spikes, too, stoppin' horses from chargin'... Some prisoners, last I checked. Rivik was plannin' on some ransom or some such 'n King Jeremiah didn't seem to care... couple girls 'n a lady. A man, too, caught him snoopin' around... Haven't touched none of them. I would never, at least."

He seemed fairly confident that none of the prisoners had been harmed, but if that was true or just him trying to get in a 'good word' in hopes that his chances of execution would be diminished remained to be seen.

For a few moments he let the question of Jeremiah hang in the air.

Then...

"... He's a monster. Never seen anyone like him... K-King Jeremiah, I mean. Never seen anyone kill so many people so fast..."

He gave a nervous glance towards the bloody battlefield.

"... P-present company excluded, I m-mean."

Fanilly took a deep breath. While it was important to ensure the prisoner was interrogated, they were also operating on a rather short time scale.

They had to keep moving.

"As soon as the prisoners are placed on the cart, we must keep moving," she asserted, as best she could, towards her knights, "When the bandits have been defeated, we'll..."

Fanilly hesitated for a moment on this note. Her eyes cast themselves around the battlefield. There were a great many dead bandits, and... it was still difficult to be in such a place for her. The blonde girl-knight hadn't seen so much death ever before, even if she had caused a portion of it.

"... We'll... we'll burn the bodies and the camp together. But for now, we'll simply get closer before proceeding with the attack as planned."

Of course, Fanilly intended to reiterate her plan of attack once they were at an appropriate position, but she felt it best to wait before splitting the knights into multiple groups as she intended. She had to try and take the best possible path at every moment. Especially given her mistakes with the injured farmer and the interrogation.

The strange sounds immediately caught Alice's attention. Given they were inside of a rift, and that there were a high amount of unknown lifeforms within such spaces, Alice promptly began to take stock of the situation. In all likelyhood, it would be hostile. Therefore...

"Potential hostile detected," she intoned, raising one arm and sweeping her hand to the side as she did. "Initializing offensive options Level One. Begin activation procedures."

The air around her began to feel considerably warmer, a faint glow radiating form her body. This was hardly the first time Alice had done something like this, but it was the first time she would be doing it in potentially active combat. There was a strange feeling in her chest, this odd tingling sensation that she couldn't describe. Just what was it? She couldn't identify it, but the machine girl couldn't allow herself to be distracted when the situation could potentially become quite dangerous.

Her toes lifted off of the ground.

"Pseudo-soul linking process stage one complete. Ego activity within normal parameters. Pseudo-soul linking process stage two complete," she recited, as her processes began to activate. The warmth in her limbs grew as magical energy focused itself all across her body, into her very core. Somehow, she could describe the sensation as 'pleasant'. "Password input accepted. Code: Blue Valkyrie. Mana conduit condition is green."

Faint sparkling lights drifted from her small frame, fading into the air as she did. A circle of light spread from beneath her feet, a star marking its center as complex symbols danced on its edges.

"Pseudo-soul linking process stage three complete: Artificial Concept Engine Activation confirmed."

As she spoke, the lights grew brighter and brighter...

"Argent Gamma initialized."

With that, there was a brilliant flash of light, and now her body was clad it what appeared to be some sort of leotard. Materializing around her right shoulder was a series of elongated cannons, their angular blew forms gleaming slightly. They were attached to an almost wing-like rack behind her shoulders, the other side featuring an enormous chainsaw-bladed weapon.

"... ARI Unit-001 combat activation successfully completed."

With that, drifting over the floor, Alice proceeded from the room with the others...

To say the battle was one-sided would have been an understatement. There was a single casualty among the Iron Rose Knights: Sir Jarde's unfortunate horse. Of course, for an order such as the Iron Roses, no-one should have been expected to die against mere bandits, even if Fanilly had been unable to prevent herself from fearing such a thing.

On the side of the bandits, however...

The forest now lay littered with the dead and dying. Fanilly had ordered her knights to finish any who were fatally injured but not yet dead. While the bandits were certainly murderers and thieves, the Iron Rose stood not only for justice, but also mercy. Undue suffering could not be allowed, and Fanilly would not be the captain who allowed it. Those who were going to die would be given a swift death, while those who lived would be brought to justice.

"Bind the hands and feet of the survivors and take them to the cart," Fanilly ordered, as she walked through the remains of the swift battle. It was... she'd never quite seen the remains of even a small engagement such as this first-hand, and it was still somewhat jarring. But she couldn't allow it to show. She was the Knight-Captain of the Iron Roses, and she had to keep herself as calm as possible.

The Iron Rose Knights stood for justice and mercy, but they also stood for retribution against those who harmed or sought to harm the innocent. As bloody as it was, this too was part of their duty. Fanilly had learned enough of Thaln's history, of the history of the order, to know that.

The most important thing now...

Fanilly raised her sword, and approached one of the as-of-yet unbound men who had surrendered. He had been quite terrified of Sir Gillian and surrendered directly to her out of fear.

She pointed the tip of her blade towards him. He was the most shaken out of all of them, and the most likely to talk if interrogated.

"Are there any further ambushes?"

Frantically he shook his head, and Fanilly cleaned her sword before sheathing it.

At the very least, now the path forward seemed obvious. She took a deep breath, attempting to gather her thoughts before speaking. There was a clear path forward now. The bandits were unaware of their presence, and while taking their time and deploying a scouting party no longer seemed wise due to an engagement already having occurred(or was it? Fanilly wasn't certain) they still had a plan in place. Encircling the camp from all sides, and moving inwards. It wasn't complicated, but it would cut off every possible escape root and ensure the 'Bandit King' couldn't flee. Additionally, they had already cut down a relatively sizable number of the bandits, meaning the force remaining at the camp would be somewhat smaller.

But... it was strange. While such an ambush was clever(and cruel, the poor farmer seemed to be recovering thanks to the swift attention at the very least however), how could such bandits have taken on the King's Men and won?

Was there something Fanilly hadn't realized yet?

For now, however, it was time to wait until the knights were ready to move on, after the surrendered bandits were imprisoned. They had to reach the camp soon.

Fanilly had to make up for any mistakes, both those she knew she had made(she could have secured the area before tending to the wounded man, but he seemed in dire straits...) and those she was perhaps as of yet unaware of. She had to. She couldn't stop.

I mean, these are people who committed murder and all kinds of nasty crimes. Those who surrender are definitely being taken prisoner, Fanilly will absolutely enforce that the knights don't kill surrendered prisoners and they need to go through the proper legal processes, but, well... the kingdom's going to execute them.

Not a good day to be one of these bandits.

@Illiren: I'm not seeing any issues here, really.
@ghastlyInc: This is your life now.
@ghastlyInc: The solution is just to make this your new job.
